With his wife, he served three missions – South Africa, Johannesburg in 1991; England Bristol in 1995; and Hawaii Honolulu in 2001. He served many positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints including the scouting program, temple worker, and several bishoprics. Together, Darrell and Wynnette traveled the globe visiting all 50 states, 6 continents, and numerous countries. They have spent the last five years living at Olympus Ranch Retirement Community.

He went fishing nearly every day of his young life and wished he was fishing every day of his adult life. He also loved reading and watching sports. His hobbies included polishing rocks and making jewelry to give to his daughters, granddaughters, and great granddaughters.
