Obituary for Dee Elaine Dwight Whitehead

6/13/1938 ~ 8/6/2017

Dee Elaine Dwight Whitehead, our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, age 79, was reunited with her eternal companion on August 6, 2017. She was born on June 13, 1938 to parents Frances Irene McKay, and estranged father, Clayton Carlos Cutts, in Glasgow, Montana. Frances (aka Peggy) later divorced and married Robert Lahr Dwight, who legally adopted her as his daughter.
Dee grew up in Butte all throughout her youth and graduated from Butte High School. On July 24, 1955, at the age of 17, she became a “pioneer”—the first member of her family to be baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1957, she met her eternal sweetheart, Michael Nixon Whitehead. They were married for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on March 18, 1960.
Dee served faithfully in the Church as a Relief Society and Gospel Doctrine teacher; Primary chorister; ward choir director; family history instructor; visiting teacher and sang with the ward choir. She loved to attend the temple to do ordinances for her ancestors. She had a great love and knowledge of the scriptures; and, loved to share her conversion story and testimony.
While raising her family, it became necessary for Dee to work outside of the home because of Mike’s health. She worked as a seamstress at Beehive Clothing Mills for 20 years, until she retired in 1993. During her years of Church employment, she graduated from Brigham Young University, at the age of 50, in December of 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. After the death of her husband in March of 2006, she devoted her time as a Family History Service Missionary in the Family History Library for five years (2006-2011). As an added blessing, she sang with the Elijah Missionary Choir at Temple Square.
Dee loved to sing and had a beautiful alto/tenor voice. Mike and Dee loved to cheer on the BYU Cougar sports teams; and, she loved to do family history work. She was an exemplar caregiver to Mike, who struggled with his health throughout most of their marriage. She was a wonderful mother who taught her daughters to obey Heavenly Father’s commandments and develop strong testimonies of the gospel.
During the final years of her life, Dee developed dementia. She moved from her home in Murray to West Valley City to live with her children. Dee enjoyed her bus trips to the Harman Senior Center to sing in the choir and participate in the activities—until she stole one too many doughnuts! In 2016, she moved to the Legacy House of Taylorsville Memory Care Facility until her death. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff and medical teams at these facilities. She loved her time with you; and we appreciate the loving care and Diet Cokes you gave to her until she passed. We love you all and will be forever grateful.
She is survived by her 3 daughters, Christie (Paul) Whiting; Laurie Whitehead; Michelle (David) Hash; 8 grandchildren; and, 10 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband; twin sons, Darin and Dallin; parents; and, brother, Jack Wraith.
