Obituary for Gaylon Hilary Olsen

Gaylon Hilary Olsen passed away April 11, 2018 in South Jordan, Utah. Gaylon was born July 20, 1934 in Hyrum, Utah the 9th of 12 children born to Fred Hilary Olsen and Ruby Cecelia Wilson. Gaylon grew up in Hyrum until he was drafted in the Army during the Korean War. He was stationed at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington where he met and married Barbara Ann Roy. They had 3 children Lynn, Tom and Roy (Spud). Gaylon worked as a foreman for B&G Construction who built military housing so the family moved from California to North Dakota to South Carolina to Florida back to California and then back to Washington state where he formed his own construction company. He was an incredibly hard worker and was very proud of his work. He was a member of the LDS Church and when he was in his forties became actively involved. He loved working with the youth of the church and they loved him. He held positions of leadership. He retired in St. George where he married Gabriela Luyong in 2015 and spent most of his time reading and watching Fox news and cursing at the television from his lounge chair. He was a jokester and loved to kid with everyone around him--especially the women. He was a favorite at his assisted living facility because he loved to joke with the staff and was fun and positive. He was the “favorite” grandpa to his grandchildren because he was always up for anything. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and always wanted to be where they were. He will be missed by us all.

He is preceded in death by his parents and six of his siblings: Wayne Olsen, Merle Olsen, Afton Green, Vern Olsen, Eileen Shultz and Faye Olsen. He is survived by his wife Gabriela and five of his siblings: Iris Andrews, Marian McFarland, Marva Richardson, Sondra Alvis and Paul Olsen. He leaves his children, Lynn (Robb) Taylor, Tom Olsen and Roy Olsen and his grandchildren: Aimee Hada, Brandon Taylor, Kimberly Call, Chase Taylor, Erin Densley, Cody Olsen, Makenna Olsen, Austin Olsen, Chloe O’Neil, Caleb Olsen, Elijah Olsen, Sophie Olsen and Ruby Olsen as well as his great-grandchildren: Oakley Taylor, Halle Hada, Remi Hada, Cash Hada, Sofia Taylor, Gianna Taylor, Bobby Hada, and Redford Call.

A viewing will be held at the LDS Chapel at 620 E Heather Road in Orem, UT on April 16, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 am. The funeral will be held in the same place at 11am. There will be a graveside service at 3:00 pm that same day at Hyrum City Cemetery where he will be laid to rest next to his parents.

We’d like to thank all the staff at Brio Home Health and Hospice and Riverway Assisted Living for the loving care they offered our Dad in this last month and the Heatheridge First Ward for providing the luncheon and helping with the funeral. Flowers or donations can be sent to Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary in South Jordan, Utah.
