Obituary for Grant Rowley

On Friday March 9th, 2018, our dad, Grant Rowley, 89, passed gently to the other side and was reunited with our mom, Grietje, who preceded him in death by 2 1/2 years.

Grant was born to Silas Asael Rowley and Martha Lucretia Anderson Rowley on October 1, 1928, in Spring Glen, Utah. He was the youngest of their five children. He served an LDS mission to the North Central States, and graduated from BYU with a bachelor’s degree in Banking & Finance.

Grant married Elizabeth Grietje Terburg on April 15, 1953, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They raised their three living children in Salt Lake City.

Grant is survived by two sons and one daughter, Matt Rowley(Sue), Joel Rowley (Cheree), and Jennifer Rowley Pittenger(John), twelve grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, their five infant sons, one granddaughter, his parents, one brother, and three sisters.

Grant was a quiet man with a tender heart. He enjoyed hiking in the Uintahs, spending time on his family’s land in Carbon County, and working in his vegetable garden, then giving most of its produce away. He was an active member of Toastmasters International. He loved to travel. He was a devoted husband and father, and worked two jobs for many years in order to finance his childrens’ higher education. After he retired from his work with the Utah State Tax Commission, he volunteered with the Utah Food Bank for several years. He lived a life of hard work and quiet service. Few were aware of how much he contributed.

Grant was partially deaf, but was so skilled at lip reading that many never knew of his disability. His later years were slowed by a degenerated spine, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s. We extend our heartfelt thanks to his caregiver Carlos, who made it possible for Dad to remain home, as was his wish, till the end.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 14, 2:00 pm at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley 1007 W. South Jordan Pkwy., South Jordan UT. Visitation will be from 1:00-1:45 pm prior to the service. Interment West Jordan Cemetery.
