Obituary for Lucille Beckstead Major

Lucille Beckstead Major is back in the saddle again with her old rodeo pals Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Jerry Scoggins, and Smiley Burnette. She returned home to the stars on August 28, 2018 at the age of 92. Born December 7, 1925 to Samuel H. Beckstead and Mina Smith in South Jordan, Utah, and was the last survivor of 9 siblings. She was proud of her pioneer heritage and royal blood lineage. She was the great-great-maternal granddaughter of Hyrum Smith, brother of Joseph Smith, first prophet of the LDS Church. Lucille graduated from Jordan High School in 1943, but because she lived in Magna and attended Cyprus High School in her sophomore year, she always said she was a Cyprus Pirate at heart. She had many fond stories of her years working in the bakery in downtown Salt Lake City and also at Woolworths. During WWII, she worked in manufacturing making television tubes. She married Jay C. Major on June 17, 1959. She later continued her career with Warner Lambert and then Becton Dickinson. After retirement, she was able to spend years doing what she loved, travelling and corresponding with her many lifelong pen pals in the Gene Autry fan club. Later she fell in love with Robert Redford and followed his career for many years. She loved writing. After suffering a stroke, and could no longer use a pen or typewriter, she was known for recruiting a scribe to compose her thoughts, whether it was a child, grandchild, nurse or neighbor.

Lucille is survived by her children Darcy (Kenneth); grandchildren: Jessica (Melissa), Zoe, and Kalista; and great-grandchildren: Sophia and Paige. She is preceded in death by her son, Tracy.

Many thanks to the caring staff of Copper Ridge Health Care, the South Jordan Fire Department, and her many dear friends and neighbors for the love and support you provided Lucille and her family over the years. Anyone who knew Lucille, for even a short period of time, was touched by her unique spirit and outlook. Regardless of her circumstances, she could always bring humor and humility to any situation. She will be sorely missed on Earth. May she be rejoicing in reunion with those who have gone before.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, 1007 W. South Jordan Parkway (10600 S), South Jordan, Utah, with a viewing from 1:00-1:45 pm. Interment at South Jordan City Cemetery.
