Obituary for Neldon "Don" Elmer Sommerville, Jr.

On Sunday, August 6, 2017, our loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather returned to his Father in Heaven. First son born to Neldon Elmer Sommerville, Sr. and Lillian Jane Michener on November 16, 1942, with an older sister Judith Raye Sommerville and younger brother Glenn Wayne Sommerville. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on December 2, 1950 in Lakewood, California.

Don attended John Marshall Junior High from 1955 to 1957 where he met Catherine Eddine Dacey. Later the two began dating the summer of 1958. Don graduated from Millikan High School in 1961. Don married Cathye on June 8, 1962 in Bellflower, California. They were sealed in the Los Angeles Temple May 23, 1964. They started their family in 1963, with 2 sons in Long Beach, California. They moved to Boise, Idaho in 1967, where they added 5 more children. In 1979, the family moved to Lodi, California where they lived for 15 years. In 1994, they transferred to West Jordan, Utah, with Conway Western Express. Don retired at age 65.

Dad was a reliable and caring husband and father. He always took care of his wife and children. He was a protector of all his family, no matter what. He could fix anything: scraped knees, splinters, and broken hearts. He was a reliable and caring neighbor, plowing, helping fix household problems, and repairing cars. Anything that needed to be done, Dad could do it. He was a jack of all trades and our fix-it-mucker.

After retiring, Don and Cathye served a service mission at Temple Square for approximately 2 years and together they served at the Oquirrh Mountain Temple for approximately 5 years.

Don and Cathye loved to travel the US in their RV, seeing historic places and collecting genealogy. Some of their favorites they visited were Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Virginia (Monticello, Williamsburg, and Yorktown), Massachusetts (Salsbury, Plymouth and Lexington Concord), Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Maine (Acadia National Park at Bar Harbor), and North Carolina.

Don is survived by his wife Cathye, his children Todd, Craig (Dana), Jared (Melissa), Melissa (Jeff) Schaugaard, Angelique Howard, Katie (Jason) Stewart, and Vanessa (Edward Weis), 36 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and his brother Glenn. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Judy. Where he is traveling new roads, until we meet again.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 11, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Cobble Creek 4th Ward, 8176 South 5140 West, West Jordan, Utah, with a viewing from 9:30-10:30 am. Interment at West Jordan City Cemetery.

Special thanks to the doctors, nurses, CNAs, and the staff at IMC Hospital in Murray, Utah and Brighton Hospice Care.
