Obituary for Norman Clarence Hammer

Norman Clarence Hammer, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away from this earthly life on October 9, 2017, of causes related to Dementia and age. Norman was born on November 26, 1930 in Murray, Utah to Clarence and Florence Pledger Hammer. Norman married the love of his life, Sonja May Sund on September 5, 1958. In 1963 they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Manti temple. Norman spent his entire life in the Salt Lake valley where he always called it home. Norman’s greatest love was his family and he spent his entire life working to make sure they were always well taken care of. Norman worked for 38 years as a baker. First at “Family Bread” and then at “Wonder Bread”. After he retired, he spent many years as a tour guide and then worked as a greeter at Walmart. Norman loved to go camping, fishing and cheering on his beloved 49ers. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and they shared many cruises together.

Norman is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sonja, son Craig Hammer (Marcia), daughters RaNae Nieto, Elaine Speirs (Steve), Jodie Simpson (Scott), numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, brother Marvin Hammer (Sharon), brother Bill Overson, sister Beverly Lenzi (Bill), several nieces, nephews and three daughters from a previous marriage, Linda, Carolyn (deceased), and Cindy. He was preceded in death by his sister, Vila Payne (Tom) and younger brother Rulon (Nancy), son-in-law Steven Speirs and grandson Tyler.

A viewing will be held on Friday, October 13, 2017 at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, 1007 W. South Jordan Parkway (10600 S), South Jordan, Utah from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 10:00 am at the Riverview 7th Ward LDS Chapel, 11420 South 700 West, Draper, with a viewing at 9:00 am prior to the funeral. Interment at the Murray City Cemetery.
