Obituary for Richard Allen Connolly

Richard “Dick” Allen Connolly, age 87, was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on December 16, 1929 and passed away on November 26, 2017. His father was Raymond Charles Connolly and his mother was Dorothy Welch Connolly. He lived in the New England states of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine as a youth. His father worked for the New England Telephone Company. Dick’s first job was delivering newspapers on a bicycle in Springfield, MA. He graduated from South Portland (Maine) High School in 1948. He graduated from the University of Maine, School of Forestry in 1952. He later went on to the Yale School of Forestry and graduated with a Masters Degree in Wood Technology in 1954. He worked as a Forester for the Eastern Pulpwood Company in Calais, ME for 2 years before starting his career with Bell Telephone Laboratories in the Timber Group and later in Research in Murray Hill, NJ for whom he worked for 35 years. He married Louise McCarthy in 1956 and they had 2 children. He built a sailboat out of fiberglass and his family sailed to Bermuda and back in it. This marriage ended in divorce in 1964. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ledgewood, NJ in October 1975. He married Carol Schull from Southbury, CT on July 8, 1977 in the Washington D.C. Temple. She had 6 children, four of whom lived with them. They lived in Randolph Township, New Jersey. They moved to Glenwood, Iowa in 1982 where Dick worked for Bellcore. They built an energy efficient Earth Sheltered home in which they lived before moving back to Cream Ridge, New Jersey. After retirement, they served a mission in Nauvoo, IL. After returning home to Cream Ridge, Carol passed away from melanoma cancer in 1994. Dick then moved to West Jordan, Utah and started a mission in the Salt Lake Family History Library where he met Fay Jean Wright serving in the library also. She had four children. They were married in January of 1999 in the Timpanogos Temple. They served a mission in the Inner City in Salt Lake for 2 years after which they served a 2-year mission in the Natural Resource Division where Dick served as a forester, determining, in the field, the age, volume, condition of the timber on property owned by the Church. After this mission, they served in the Tampa, Florida Mission for two years. Then he served as a Welfare Square Bishop for 30 months. They were in charge of the mission finances, missionary housing, and the office work. His Church Ward callings included: Priest Advisor, Scoutmaster, High Priest Group Leader, Branch President, Bishop, Librarian and Ward Greeter. Dick was an Eagle Scout and served as a Scout Master in New Jersey and Iowa and has always supported Scouting. Dick has been a Temple Worker in the Oquirrh Mountain Temple from 2010 to 2016. In his later years, he also delivered Meals on Wheels and visited Hospice patients weekly and became very good friends with them. His hobbies were wood working, gardening and preserving their produce. Special thanks to Brianne, Marie, Char, and Angela of Encompass Hospice.

He is survived by his dear wonderful wife: Fay Jean Connolly, his son Richard Welch Connolly of Arizona, his daughter Diane McCarthy Connolly of Colorado, his granddaughter Clara Connolly, and his sister Jean (Connolly) Meyer of Connecticut. He is also survived by his stepchildren: Todd Schull, Karl Schull, Traci Heppler (Schull), Kurt Schull, Richard Schull, and Kent Schull, Randall Wright, Daylene Wright, Ward Wright and Cindy Fraser (Wright) and their numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, a sister Jacqueline Hutchinson, and a brother Robert Connolly.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Welby 3rd Ward Chapel, 8385 South 4800 West, West Jordan. Viewings will be held on Friday, December 1, 2017 at 6:00-8:00 pm at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, 1007 W. South Jordan Parkway (10600 S), South Jordan, Utah and on Saturday from 10:00-10:45 am at the church. Interment at Salt Lake City Cemetery.
