Obituary for Robert Kent Halliday

1930 ~ 2017
Murray, UT—Robert Kent Halliday, age 87, quietly passed away in his home on July 28, 2017 after years of loving care by his dear wife, Yvonne. In his final hours, he was blessed to have his family gathered around him, singing hymns and sharing their goodbyes.
As a lifelong resident of Murray, Bob spent most of his life on Benbow Street, where he built his own home and raised his family. He was a beloved husband, father, and patriarch.
Bob was born on July 5, 1930, the third child of George Edmund Halliday and Jennie (Walker) Halliday. After losing his father at age six, Bob learned the values of hard work and thrift from his resourceful mother, and gained strength and guidance from his Aaronic priesthood leaders. He graduated from Murray High School in 1948. After working for Kennecott copper mine, he graduated from the University of Utah in 1957 with a degree in Elementary Education, and later went on to earn his masters degree. He touched many lives during his years in the Granite School District as a teacher, principal, area administrator, and director of transportation. He firmly believed that people make all the difference, that “people make life worth living.”
Bob was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving twice both as bishop and high councilman. He served for many years in the Jordan River Temple, and as a missionary with his wife at the Cove Fort Historic Site in Utah from 2001-2003.
Bob and Yvonne (Gunnell) were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1950. They have been blessed with five children, twenty-one grandchildren, and forty-one great-grandchildren. Bob felt so proud of his "wonderful posterity," and consistently showed this love through gifts of service, money and time. It can truly be said that he gave his all to his family.
Bob is survived by his wife, Doris Yvonne; his children, Robert Gregory (Susan) Halliday, Susan Carroll, Karen (Richard) Greco, Michael Kent (Kari) Halliday, and Mark Eldin (Tammy) Halliday; and his younger sister, Joyce (Newel) Standley. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Jennie Halliday; his two older brothers, Vance and Walker; a son-in-law, Barry Carroll; as well as a granddaughter and a great-grandson.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, August 6, 2017, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 So. State St. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 7, 2017, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS chapel where he served as bishop, 363 E. Vine St., with an additional viewing from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the same location. Interment to follow at the Murray City Cemetery.
