Obituary for Thomas Garn Milar

Garn Milar passed away peacefully in his home on July 31, 2018. Garn was preceded in death by his daughter Linda Rodeback and son-in-law Winn Noyes. He is survived by his loving wife Dorothy Gust Milar; his children Kenneth (Judy) Milar, Patti (Winn) Noyes, Gordon (Cora) Milar, Ronald (Melody) Milar and Jim Milar; along with his 22 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren.

Garn was the oldest child of Thomas and Alice Elaine Milar, born on May 18, 1933 in Hunter, Utah. He graduated from Cyprus High School where he was student body president. In high school he ran track and set the record for the fastest mile in five western states, while winning the BYU Invitational.

He married Dorothy Gust on October 20, 1950 in Magna, Utah. The marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple in 1964. He raised his family in Kearns then relocated to South Jordan where he has resided for the past 38 years. During this time, he worked for Kennecott where he retired as a foreman after 32 years. He also held many callings within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints including Bishop, special needs mutual and High Council.

Garn was widely known as an artist in woodcarving and painting. He could often be seen sketching or whittling as he worked on his latest piece. He was a handy-man who could fix or create anything. He shared his talents in the Days of ’47 Parade where he created a float which won the Judges Award. He loved gardening, fishing, hiking, backpacking, rock collecting, and indian artifacts. Garn was known for his physical and spiritual strength which touched and influenced many lives for good.

Viewing will be held Friday, August 3rd from 6:00-8:00 pm at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley located at 1007 W. South Jordan Parkway (10600 So.) South Jordan, Utah.
Funeral services for Garn will be held on Saturday, August 4th at 2:00 pm in the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints South Jordan Chapel, 2450 West 10400 South, South Jordan Utah. Family and friends may attend a viewing at the church on Saturday afternoon from 1:00-2:00 pm. prior to services. Interment will be in the South Jordan Cemetery located at 10650 South 1055 West, South Jordan, Utah immediately following services. Online condolences may be shared at www.jenkins-soffe.com
