Obituary for Tracy Dean Wright

Tracy Dean Wright began his mortal journey on September 25, 1934 as the 8th of 15 children born to Cleeo Datell Wright and Mary Hill Musser in Salt Lake City, Utah.

From an early age Tracy was intelligent and patriotic, and his naturally competitive and enthusiastic nature made him a leader among his friends. He was optimistic, charismatic and generous with his time and means. He had a great sense of humor and a strong work ethic.

Tracy was a WWII history buff and a twin engine airplane pilot. He loved hunting and the outdoors, and made the best Mexican salsa in the U.S.

Even before serving his three-year LDS mission to Mexico in 1954-1957, Tracy had a special affinity for the Spanish-speaking people and served them faithfully throughout his life. In addition to his missionary service, Tracy served 11 years in the Utah Air National Guard, earned a BS in Agriculture from Utah State Agricultural College and received an MBA from Brigham Young University in 1964.

Tracy married his sweetheart Janet Faith Patten for time and all eternity in the LDS Logan Utah Temple on November 21, 1962, and the couple was blessed with 11 children. During their early years of marriage, he worked for Hiland Dairy and served as a group leader and bus driver for SOCOTWA, a youth group that traveled through the U.S. and Mexico for educational purposes. He also taught the Dale Carnegie instructor courses for several years.
As a hardworking and dedicated visionary, Tracy ran several businesses, including CamperMart, Rainbow Development Corporation, Exchange Enterprises and Wright’s Furniture Mill. He also worked for Weyerhaeuser and Boise Cascade. During the last half of his career, Tracy spearheaded Timp Manufacturing, building and installing premium architectural millwork, which included installations and renovations for 100s of LDS churches and 26 temples. He was proud that he had the opportunity to work with all 6 sons in the fine art of finish carpentry.

Active all his life in Boy Scouts of America, Tracy earned the rank of Eagle Scout, served as a scoutmaster and taught several Woodbadge courses. For his lifetime of dedicated service to the Scouting program, Tracy was honored in 1981 with the Silver Beaver award, one of scouting’s highest honors.

Tracy served in the church as an early morning seminary teacher, as a counselor in several bishoprics, as a bishop in Meridian, Idaho and as a high counselor. He was also a Language Training Specialist in the Utah Salt Lake City South Mission and a Spanish-speaking temple worker in the Jordan River Temple and Salt Lake Temple.

Tracy passed away peacefully on April 13, 2018 at the age of 83, surrounded by his loving wife of 55 years, his 7 living children and other family members. He is survived by his devoted wife Janet; 7 siblings; children Kevin (Janet M.) of Yorba Linda CA, Julie (Edwin) Calkins of Salt Lake City, Spencer of Salt Lake City, Virginia (Robb) Lund of Nazareth, PA, Vaughn (Traci) of Salt Lake City, Forrest (Tina) of Salt Lake City, and Bradley (Jessica) of Hurricane, UT; 26 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by both parents; 7 brothers; children Tracy Jr (twin), Janet (twin), Glen and Courtney.

Friends may call Monday, April 16, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary at 4760 S State St, Murry, UT.
