Obituary for Velma H. Stewart

Velma Augusta Hedberg Stewart, age 99, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died peacefully surrounded by family, August 6, 2017.

Velma was born May 16, 1918 in Murray, Utah to Fred Carl Hedberg and Ebba Augusta Eklund Hedberg. She graduated from Murray High School and proudly lived most of her life in Murray. Velma married Benjamin Grant Stewart May 16, 1946, later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Velma and Grant had three sons: Bruce, Richard, and Steven. Velma was a faithful and true member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She sent her three sons on missions, watched each of her boys married in the temple, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren born in the covenant. Largely due to her example, Velma’s sons have served as priesthood leaders and teachers in the kingdom and, as a result, thousands of lives, young and old, have been blessed and strengthened.

A widow for 22 years, Velma was proud of her independence and struggled to live on her own and maintain her dignity. With the help of her sons, she managed to do so until she was taken to the hospital Friday last. The family expresses a heartfelt thanks to the Home Teachers and Visiting Teachers of the Hyland Lake Ward, who visited her regularly, and her neighbors on Lillie Circle who kept watch for any problems.

Velma was preceded in death by her husband, Grant; her mother and father; two brothers, Art and Lee; and two sisters, Lillian and Verna. She is survived by her sons, Bruce (Lynnette), Richard (Diane), and Steven (Laura); ten grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren; and her younger sisters, June and Donna.

Family and friends may gather to remember Velma on Thursday, August 10, 2017 from 6–8 PM at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State Street, Murray, UT. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 11, 2017 at Murray City Cemetery.
