Obituary for Virginia A. Rowe

Virginia Abshire Jarvis Rowe, age 94, passed away on April 6, 2018, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Born April 6, 1924 in Midkiff, West Virginia. Married Bertram James Jarvis (divorced/ deceased). Survived by three children: Lynette (Sid) Rundell of Polson, Montana; Jim (Dortha) Jarvis of Salt Lake City, Utah; and Joni (Jay) Henion of Monroe, Utah; one grandson; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Leona Cobern of Columbus, Ohio. Preceded in death by her husband, William Rowe; mother, Elizabeth Abshire Mecham; and step-father, Wallace Mecham.
At the age of 13 Virginia moved from Cincinnati, Ohio with her Aunt to Salt Lake City, Utah to live, go to school, and work until her mother could join her. She graduated from East High School in 1942, attended LDS Business College, and took classes at the University of Utah. She served an LDS Mission in the Northern States (1942-43).
In Virginia’s early 20’s she worked at Strevell-Patterson Hardware Company, spent 31 years in the accounting department at Sperry Univac, and owned and operated Pickwick Fish & Chips (1969-71). In her spare time she worked as a cashier for 27 years at Diamond Lil’s.
Virginia was a beautiful and talented seamstress and made all her clothes as she grew up. She also sewed for her friends and 2 daughters over the years. She especially enjoyed making wedding dresses and bridesmaids dresses to which she believes there were 25 in total. She also enjoyed doing needlework, making numerous beautiful needlepoint projects and crocheted afghans.
Virginia was always available when the opportunity arose to make a trip to Wendover to play the dollar slots. There was never any doubt that she would come away a winner!
Many thanks over the years to aides and staff of The Wentworth East Millcreek, The Avenues Courtyard assisted living facility, and Millcreek Hospice. Their love and care made her later years much easier for her.
A viewing will be held on Monday, April 9, 2018, from 6-8 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Funeral Home, 4760 South State Street, Murray, Utah. A private graveside service will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at 10 a.m. at Elysian Burial Gardens.
