Alyce Merhar Coleman Obituary (1920 - 2010)

Alyce Merhar Coleman died peacefully July 28, 2010 surrounded by her family. Alyce was born January 8, 1920 to Frank Merhar and Anna Pluth in Ely, Minnesota, the youngest of three children. Her father died when she was 6 and she was raised by an overbearing mother. Nevertheless, she did well in school, wrote poetry and was a fine athlete, including ice skating during the long Minnesota winters and life guarding in the summers. Upon graduation from high school, she moved to San Diego, CA to look after her sister, Dorothy’s, children. Soon thereafter she met her husband to be, Calvin Y. Coleman, who was captivated by her charm, abundant good looks and fine figure. They were married in 1940 and had four daughters and one son. She and her husband lived in Los Angeles during World War II, then followed Cal’s successful career as a finance and insurance agent to Butte, Montana for 15 years, then moved to Murray, Utah in 1959. In addition to her husband, Alyce was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Durrell. She leaves behind an older brother, Robert Merhar of Minneapolis and her five children, Donna Moriarty, Suzette Thomas, Jeanne McDougal, Kathy Barnash and Calvin Coleman, Jr. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, July 31st, at 10:00 a.m. at Murray City Cemetery, 5600 S. Vine Street.
