Carrie Marie Layton Obituary (1928 - 2016)

Carrie Marie Layton, age 87, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2016 of complications due to a stroke. She finally found her river. Carrie was born March 14, 1928 in Travers, Alberta, Canada to Horton George Layton and Selma Josephine Sanders Layton. She grew up in Trail, British Columbia, Canada. Carrie joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1938, along with two older sisters, an older brother and her mother. Her father was already a member. In 1946 Carrie came to Salt Lake City to study nursing at the University of Utah. She met Lloyd Layton and they were married April 6, 1948. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on December 5, 1949. He passed away May 5, 1981. Carrie married Fred Jewkes December 20, 1986. He passed away January 20, 2000. She married Michael Bennett September 1, 2001; later divorced. He passed away December 25, 2014. Carrie endured many hardships during her life as she grew up during the depression but through it all there were wonderful times of happiness and joy. Time spent at the family farm when she was younger brought happiness as she reflected on those memories. And after she had her own family, vacations were usually spent in the mountains camping, with an occasional trip to Canada to visit her family. Those trips to Canada brought her joy as she was able to visit friends from her youth and family she loved and missed. After her retirement, Carrie and Fred traveled extensively, visiting much of the central and western United States and Canada. How she loved to travel. She often talked of her dream vacation which was to travel to Australia. However, that dream was never fulfilled. In her youth Carrie was a member of and a leader in the Canadian Girl Guides and loved the Scouting program. In 1957 she helped form a Boy Scouts of America Cub Scout Pack in the 34th Ward of the LDS Church in Salt Lake City. She was a faithful den leader and helped many boys learn to love the Scouting program. She was very supportive in helping her sons and grandsons earn their Eagle Scout award. Lloyd was a construction worker and had no insurance, so to provide insurance Carrie worked outside the home as a meat wrapper, and apprentice and journeyman meat cutter. She had the opportunity to end her career as a meat department manager for Safeway stores. She loved teaching and on her days off would often substitute teach in the Salt Lake and Granite School Districts. Carrie was an avid reader and always had a book she was reading. She and Fred volunteered for many years at the Utah Library for the Blind sorting books on tape that had been returned. This continued after Fred's passing until she could no longer drive and had to give it up. Until her passing she continued to receive large print books from the library and would read constantly. When visited at the assisted living center she would always be found in a chair or on her bed reading. She would take a book to meals to ensure she had something to do in case no one else at her table came to eat. She enjoyed quilting and made quilts for several of her children and grandchildren. After several falls Carrie reluctantly left her stair filled home in Salt Lake and moved to an assisted living center near her son Lloyd and sister Clarice. This was a difficult transition but she eventually adjusted and enjoyed participating in the many activities offered at the center. She was able to once again attend church meetings and loved the leaders of the LDS branch. As she would interact with staff, residents and church leaders they would ask how she was doing. Her ready answer was that she was tired, was ready to go "home" and wanted someone to throw her in the river. One aide, when told that, light heartedly said they couldn't do it because it would involve too much paperwork. Many others also had wonderful come backs for her. After her passing one person said, "She finally found her river." A humorous response that lightened the day of her passing. Carrie was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; two sisters; Lavona and Judy; and three brothers, George, Archie, and Stan. She is survived by her brother Tom (Millie); a sister, Clarice (Grant); children: Lloyd Jr (Peggy), Barbara (Doug), Jean (Jerry), and Stan (Becky); 15 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren. Private family services will be held. The family would like to thank the staffs at the Legacy House of Taylorsville assisted living center, the Silverado Aspen Park skilled nursing center and Silverado Hospice for their caring love and concern for Carrie.
