Clyde Joseph Felsted Obituary (1924 - 2017)

Clyde Joseph Felsted came into the world silently on October 18, 1924 until the country doctor dipped him into warm and cold water until he protested loudly. He left the world the same way, silently, surrounded by loving family on August 31, 2017. He is the son of Joseph William Felstead and Lucy Emily Hammond. He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Josephine Williams and Eunice Udy; and his two brothers, Albert and Earl Felstead. Clyde grew up in Grantsville and was always proud to be a Grantsville High Cowboy. Clyde performed at the Grantsville Opera House in his younger days. He had a great voice and was willing to share his talent. When he turned 18, he was drafted into the Army during WWII and served in the 91st Infantry Division that broke the Gothic Line and liberated northern Italy from the Nazi occupation. He was proud of the fact that his division fired the most rounds of mortar of any during the war. Of course, this led to the wearing of hearing aids for most of the men later. When the war ended, he came home and went back to high school for six months so he could graduate. Before he was drafted, he came to Salt Lake City and stopped at an ice cream shop and met Geraldine Clayton. She wrote to him while he was gone; and one of his first stops, when he returned from Italy, was to go find her again. She remembers going out of her front door and seeing this handsome soldier coming down the street….they were married on July 31, 1946 and recently celebrated 71 years together. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on June 11, 1947. Clyde and Gerry are the parents of Christy (Vernon) Berrie, LaRae (Kim) Handy, and Scott (Christine) Felsted. They have 20 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren who miss him already. Clyde worked for several years for Sears, Roebuck and then joined the U.S. Postal Service. Everyone knew and liked him on his routes, including the dogs that he gave treats to. He was also the Vice President of the Letter Carriers Union. Clyde was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings. He and Gerry served 20 years in the Jordan River Temple, served 2 years as Service Missionaries in the Family History Library, and 6 years as Service Missionaries at Intermountain Medical Center visiting and giving comfort to the patients. Clyde loved to hunt and fish and was considered “the best fisherman around” because he always came home with something. He shared that knowledge freely with others and helped the scouts earn their fishing merit badges. He tied his own flies, poured his own sinkers, and wrapped his own poles. In his spare time, he would create things out of wood for his home, and other people would bring their projects to him for crafts. If he couldn’t find a pattern, he would create one. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. at the LDS Chapel located on 5425 South 600 West (Allendale Drive), Murray, Utah. There will be a viewing from 10:00-11:30 a.m. prior to the services. Interment will follow at the Murray City Cemetery, 5600 South Vine Street, Murray, Utah.
