Craig A. Thompson Obituary (1970 - 2017)

9/6/1970 ~ 10/18/2017 Craig A. Thompson was given the gift of life in September 1970 and had to give it back on October 18, 2017 after his courageous 4-year battle with cancer. He fought very hard to stay here with all of us. He was a lucky man who led a great life, surrounded by many who adored him. Craig attended Highland HS and was a State Champion on the Hockey Team. He gained some of his best friends and 5 championships while playing roller hockey for Salty Peaks. He was a proud graduate of the University of Utah in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science Nursing. He was truly Ute Proud. Immediately after he graduated he became a nurse for the Salt Lake County Jail. This was more than just a job to him, he often referred to the Jail as his “home away from home” and cherished his time there. Craig achieved honorable awards and saved a co-worker’s life while on duty, that is who he was. Craig exemplified extraordinary beauty of the simple human heart. He was the youngest of 6 siblings. He held a special bond with each of them. He was more than just their baby brother, he was each of their best friends. He deeply cared about his family and friends; to know him was to love him. Although he was very talented and accomplished in many aspects of his life, he would tell you that his greatest accomplishments were marrying his soulmate, Courtney in 1999, and becoming a father to Henry, his “boy blue.” He and Courtney quickly became an admirable and beloved couple by all that knew them. The day she made him a father to his son, Henry “Hank” in 2004, was the greatest day of his life. They held a special bond and he was so proud of the young man his son is becoming. Craig was happiest outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, golfing, bowling and traveling. He was very charming, had a knack for knowing just what to say at the perfect time, and could win anyone over with his sense of humor. Although witty, he was also very even-keeled in his demeanor, making it easy to befriend him. He really knew how to “hook ‘em and sink ‘em.” In the end, he found peace with his life and untimely death. Knowing and loving each of you was the success story of his life. Craig is most grateful for Courtney. She was a devoted wife and stood by his side with an unwavering love, holding his hand until his final breath. Craig is preceded in death by his father, Norman, and sister-in-law, Mia. He is survived by his mother: Cora; wife: Courtney; son: Henry; in-laws: Oma, Harold, and Harold Jr.; brothers: Norm (Kelly), Kent (Tina); sisters: Shelley, Sheila, Shirleen; nieces: Chandra, Rya, Melisa, Hailey; nephews: Bret, Bryce, Garret, Ayden; great-nephews/nieces; and many more much-loved family and treasured friends. May you always remember obstacles in the path are not obstacles, they are the path. As you walk your paths, in Craig’s honor, we ask that you stop along the way to make someone smile, laugh, play a practical joke, be generous with your love, be loyal, be brave, and when you think of him, always remember that one-of-a-kind “Craig grin.” A Celebration of Life will be held for Craig on November 4, 2017 from 1-4 pm (open-house) at Mountain Dell Golf Course.
