Click HERE to view Graveside Services for David Lynn West On February 14, 2021, our beloved dad and grandpa, David Lynn West, was reunited with his Valentine, Janice Jensen West. Their reunion was even sweeter as four of their children turned over their eternal care to their oldest son. Dave was born November 18, 1933, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Dean Stewart West and Helen Elizabeth Palmquist. Although he was raised during the Great Depression, the family plot at the top of the 3900 South hill provided an idyllic setting for him, his two brothers, and his four cousins— the “Brown boys.” Their antics earned Dave the nickname “Sparky” and imprinted their eternal brotherhood. Their kinship was preserved with countless fishing, boating, and golfing exploits, and the sacred hunting trips to the Book Cliffs, all shared with their posterity. Dave and Jan met while working alongside each other at a local grocery store and attending Granite High School. They married May 7, 1954, while Dave was between assignments for the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. He spent their first year alone at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska, serving as a Morse code translator. Upon his return, they were stationed in Mountain Home, Idaho, where the first two of their five children were born. Murray, Utah, was the next stop for this young family. Dave and Jan continued to work side by side to pursue their dreams. Jan ensured every aspect of home life was tended to as Dave worked two and three jobs while completing his education at the University of Utah (and throwing an occasional softball!). With a Master’s Degree in Education, Dave spent his entire career with Murray School District. His passion for knowledge, belief in the potential of children, and aptitude for leadership landed him first as a high school history teacher, then as a counselor, and finally as the assistant superintendent. His valued colleagues have remained close and constant friends. As their family grew, Dave and Jan planted their permanent roots in Midvale, Utah. Together, they built, nurtured, and cherished their family and home. Our dad shaped each of his children’s lives in a meaningful way. He instilled his values of a job well done whether in the classroom or on the field. His love of and commitment to family is reflected in each of us. Dave found fulfillment in perfecting his home and yard. He valued an early morning (fueled with a sugar-laden pastry and coffee), a day of hard work (interrupted by cookies and Diet Coke), and a beautiful summer night (completed with Jan’s hand to hold and a good book). The second best place to find this joy was in the outdoors, especially Flaming Gorge. The annual family trek was nearly two weeks of “really living.” Unbreakable bonds were formed learning to stake a tent, catch a fish, spot wildlife, cook over a campfire, or waterski on a serene bay. It was his slice of heaven on Earth. In their golden years, Dave and Jan were their grandchildren’s biggest fans. Whether a game, race, recital, program, or just giving their gift of time, they offered encouragement, comfort, and security. He carried on their joint mission singly the last five years. Grandpa’s big voice, gentle hands, and strong heart profoundly touched each of them. He honored Jan and their legacy by making sure every child and grandchild felt their love before he left for her embrace. Deep and sincere gratitude for the patient and tender love given by close neighbors, friends, and caregivers from Love at Home. Survived by daughter Pam (Ron) Call, daughter Sandra (Wade) Winegar, son Stewart (Jennifer) West, daughter Mindy (Dave) Leo, sister Sharon (Brent) Burton, 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and dear extended family and friends. Preceded in death by wife Janice West, son David Kent West, brothers Calvin and Richard West, and his parents. Dave financially supported the mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. In lieu of flowers, a donation to this mission or a charity of choice is appreciated. Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at 1:00 p.m., Murray City Cemetery, 5600 S.
