Dean LaVon Freeman Obituary (1922 - 2008)

“Proud to have served his country” Dean grew up in Idaho among 2 sisters and 5 brothers (one passed away in his youth). After graduating from High School, he moved to Provo, Utah where he attended BYU one year before enlisting in the US Navy. After completion of his officer training, he served as an Ensign in World War II, actively serving in the Pacific at a variety of duties. During this time he received the following honors: American Theatre Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal, and Victory Medal World War II. After his 1946 separation from active duty, he was a naval reservist until 1956 when he was honorably discharged. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from April 1947 to June 1949 in Southern California. It was from these two experiences in his life that he developed a life long love for Hawaii and California. He returned from his mission to finish his schooling, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Business from Brigham Young University in 1952. He loved music and received instruction under J. Spencer Cornwall for choral conducting and used this skill often throughout his life, as well as having sung in many choirs and as a soloist. One his favorite numbers to sing was “How Great Thou Art”. He could also make the violin sing as an accomplished violinist. He loved to golf. Perhaps this love led to his independent business ventures over the years, ending with his own realty company which he was actively involved in ‘til his death. He just renewed his license last moth. Being his own boss allowed him the freedom he wanted. He is survived by one brother, Grant Freeman; sisters, Elaine McNutt and Faye (John) Horspool; children, Robert B. (Lori) Freeman, Thomas D. (Lisa) Freeman and Jodene (Kevin) Moser. Also many nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. Much gratitude goes out to the Horspool family, especially Mike for the many years of friendship and service in Dean’s behalf. A graveside service will be held Friday, May 30, 2008, 11:00 am at Utah Veterans Memorial Park, 17111 So Camp William Road, Bluffdale Utah.
