Delbert "Del" Markham Obituary (1924 - 2009)

“Del” Del Markham, 85, passed away Saturday, September 5, 2009 (he answered the final bell) of causes incident to age. He was born on March 14, 1924 in Tooele, Utah to Lavon and Clifford Markham. Raised in Salt Lake City and Tooele, he left school at age 17 and joined the Navy, serving on the USS Tennessee during WWII. Del returned to school as an adult to earn his school diploma. Married Opal Judd in 1949; one son, Mike. Later divorced. Married Julia Vicchrilli September 22, 1956; two sons, Phil and Chuck. Del was a salesman his whole life, working for a number of companies as well as his own. He was involved with boxing for most of his life as an amateur boxer, referee, and judge for over 40 years. Del was also a founding Board Member of the Murray Boy’s and Girl’s Club. His work with youth in our community is a great legacy. Survived by wife, Julia; sons, Mike (Sheryl) Markham, Phil (Jami) Markham, Chuck (Sun) Markham; seven grandchildren; and sisters, Diane Olson and Jeanette Fahrni. Preceded in death by his father; mother; sisters, Muggs Petersen and Pat Harris. Del’s viewing will be at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 So. State Street, on Thursday, September 10, 2009, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. with a rosary following at 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, September 11, 2009 at 11:00 a.m., with a viewing from 10:00-11:00 a.m., at St. Vincent DePaul Church, 1385 E. Spring Lane. Interment: Murray City Cemetery. The family suggests donations to the South Valley Boy’s and Girl’s Club in lieu of flowers.
