Obituary for Donald Lee McCaughey

Donald Lee McCaughey, age 78, peacefully left this mortal life on October 4, 2018. He was an honest and faithful man. He was a man with strong opinions, which at times offended others; but his intention was never to do so. You always knew where he stood on issues. He developed long friendships in business, on the golf course, and with neighbors.

Don is the oldest child of Raymond Butler McCaughey and Eva Marie Spence. It is interesting to note that his mother was born in the territory of Arizona. He was born on December 25, 1939 and grew up in Las Vegas. He graduated from UNLV and pursued graduate studies at University of Nevada—Reno. While there he co-authored two books on “Nevada Historical Sites”. He taught high school for a short time. While history, especially WW II, was a passion, he turned his focus to business. While working as an operations manager at the Sears store at Fashion Place Mall, he met Kay. They were married on March 24, 1973 and enjoyed life together for 45+ years. His main business career was with Genuine Auto Parts (NAPA) where he worked in various management positions in California, Ohio, and New York. His last position was as the Western Division Trainer based in Fresno, California. In the position, he influenced countless NAPA store managers throughout the West.

Next to history, his greatest passion was golf. One of his golf highlights was shooting a hole-in- one on July 19, 1987 on the 17th 108-yard Par 3 hole at Rancho Canada East. Don and Kay retired to Stansbury Park so that Kay could be near her family. From the first days of spring to the last day without snowfall, Don was on the links. He enjoyed the camaraderie. He enjoyed the fresh air. He enjoyed the challenge.

Don is survived by his wife, Linda Kay Nielsen McCaughey (Stansbury Park); his two children from a previous marriage: Lisa Marie Adler (Last Vegas) and Donald Lee McCaughy Jr. (Las Vegas); and Casey, their beloved dog.

A memorial service honoring Don’s life will be held on October 12, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Village building (390 Village Blvd, Stansbury Park). A loving gathering will be held an hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Salt Lake Humane Society. As a symbol of their love for each other, Don’s ashes will be buried with Kay at a future time.
