Dr. Arthur L. Bishop Obituary (1922 - 2017)

Our beloved dad, grandpa Bish, great grandpa, passed away at his home on June 10, 2017, just one week after his 95th birthday. Art was born June 3, 1922 to Arthur Leroy Bishop and Eva May Stauffer Bishop. He was a lifelong resident of Murray. Art graduated from Murray High School where he served as student body president, played football, ran track, jumped the pole-vault, and was an all-state basketball player. He attended the University of Utah where he lettered in basketball and track, and studied mathematics, education, and ROTC. Prior to Army active duty Art married his high school sweetheart Jean Mirleen Whitehead in the Salt Lake Temple. They had a wonderful 65 year marriage. During World War II he served 3 years of active duty in the New Guinea and Philippine Islands areas as 1st Lieutenant in the Army Signal Corps. Following the war, Art returned to the University of Utah for additional schooling and graduation. In 1968 he earned Doctor of Education, in Education Administration. He served in the Murray School District for 24 years as a teacher, coach, principal and district administrator. He also served in the Utah State Office of Education for 16 years as Director of School Finance and Administrative Assistant to the State Superintendent of Schools. Art retired from work following his 40 year career as an educator. Art was an actively participating member of the Murray Lions Club for 64 years. Art loved his profession and working with youth. He strived to be an inspiration to his family, students, and friends. He enjoyed teaching, church service, family activities, trips, dancing, music, fishing, family history, temple work, visits to St. George, and competitive sports. His positive influence has been broadly felt by many. Art will be dearly missed, but his influence will live on, especially in the hearts of his family. Art is survived by his four sons, Lee (Camie), Brian (Margaret), Dale, Eric (Pamela), 12 grandchildren, and 22 great grandchildren. Art is preceded in death by his parents and loving wife Jean; Arline Markosian and Jean Ellis Bishop (sisters); Earl R. Watrous (cousin); Adam (grandson); and Bridger, Finleigh & Faith (great grandchildren). Friends and family are invited to a viewing on Friday June 16, 2017 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State Street, Murray, Utah. The Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Murray Homestead Ward, 5605 S. Vine Street, Murray, Utah. An additional viewing will take place prior to the services from 9:30 – 10:45 AM. Interment will be at the Murray Cemetery 5600 S. Vine Street. The Family wishes to express our deeply felt gratitude to dad's caregivers over the past several months. Staci Bishop was amazing, always at the forefront of these efforts.
