F.C. (Shuse) Stangl, III Obituary (1938 - 2017)

Our beloved Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather, Franz Courtney Stangl III (Shuse), passed away Monday March 13, 2017, almost one week after his 79th birthday, from complications related to Alzheimer's. He was born March 7, 1938 to Franz Courtney Stangl II and Margaret Amy Platte. He was the oldest of three children. As a boy in Joplin, Missouri he developed an independent spirit that remained with him his entire life. He loved trapping, hunting and fishing the rivers and woods around his home. He also played all sports and attended Kansas University first on a football, then basketball and lastly an academic scholarship. He married Elizabeth Anne Robinson (Liz) on December 30, 1959 in Cedar Vale, Kansas and to this happy marriage was born two children Margaret (Margo) Wynn Stangl and Michael Courtney Stangl. He and Liz moved to Utah in 1961 to raise their young family because Shuse had passed through Salt Lake as a young man and thought it was a great place to raise a family - a story he loved to tell. They bought a home in Murray and Shuse, with Liz, by his side began in the business of construction and real estate development and management. After Liz's passing, he married Jackie Heiner and they worked together in the business he started. He was active in this business until as recently as 2016. The many projects he built are a reminder of his expertise and influence in the Salt Lake Valley and surrounding areas. He was a unique force of nature who succeeded as a result of a tireless work ethic and the sheer force of his extraordinary personality. He loved real estate development and was always thinking of and designing projects on a handwritten notepad or napkin. No fan of technology, he analyzed his deals and proposals on an adding machine. As a result of his knowledge, experience and guidance, both Margo and Mike have remained in the real estate development business. Shuse traveled the world pursuing his love of bird hunting and fishing and was always planning the next trip. At his birthday party last week he wanted to know when we were going fishing again. He loved and influenced not only his family, but good friends and those with whom he worked and associated. He will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his sister Gay (Richard) Dawley, and his brother Cody Stangl, his wife Elizabeth Ann Robinson Stangl and wife Jackie Heiner Stangl. He is survived by children Margo Wynn (Jon) Cowley and Michael Courtney (Therese) Stangl, four grandchildren Matthew (Caitlin) Cowley, Andrea (Peter) Santamaria, Christine (Caleb) Jackson and Nicole Stangl and one great grandson, Oliver Santamaria. As a family we are grateful for the outpouring of love, support and prayers of our family and friends. Per Shuse's wishes there will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers the family requests that those who knew and loved Shuse please write a brief note with your favorite Shuse sayings, wisdom and stories that we can share with our children.
