Gloria Cecile Manwaring Goddard Obituary (1929 - 2015)

Gloria was born in Salt Lake City on August 2, 1929, to Lorus A. and Florence Barlow Manwaring. She passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, August 5, 2015. She had a happy youth and, as an only child, divided her time between Salt Lake and her grandparents' home in North Salt Lake. At a very young age her artistic gifts were evident. She was skilled in sewing, flower arranging, quilting, ceramics, and painting, including murals and hand-painted tiles which adorn a number of homes in the Salt Lake area. In her later years she spent many hours coloring. Mom was one who believed she could tackle any task or project that many would shy away from, such as building a rock wall (which still stands 50 years later), and reupholstering and refinishing furniture for her home. She met the love of her life, Harold Wright Goddard, in the University of Utah library when she was 17. It was love at first sight and they married in the Salt Lake Temple nine months later. They were blessed with five children. Mom and Dad met monthly for over 50 years with dear college friends as a "Study Group". They enjoyed a wonderful LDS mission in Nauvoo, Illinois which was a highlight in her life. She selflessly cared for Dad as he struggled with poor health and also cared for her aging parents in her home for over 6 years. Mom's patience and sacrifice, with never a complaint, is truly an example to all. She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and had a deep love for the Savior and His Gospel. She served valiantly in many church callings throughout her life. Gloria is survived by her children David (Bonnie), Richard (Kathy), Janet (Ron) Johnson, Carol (John) Homer, and Cherilyn (Rolynn); 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. The family expresses special thanks to Terry Selcho for her loving care of our parents for 2 ½ years. We also extend appreciation to Silvia de Souza for her tender service. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at the Riverton 16th Ward Chapel located at 1208 West 12400 South.
