Gordon Eugene Oborn Obituary (1933 - 2008)

“Coach O“ Gordon E. Oborn , age 74, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on August 22, 2008, after a short courageous battle with cancer. He was born on November 14, 1933 in Salt Lake City to Arlow Oborn and Wilma Porter. He married Mildred Kraft December 18, 1958 . Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. After serving for two years in the United States Army, Gordon graduated from the University of Utah with a masters degree in physical education and recreation and leisure. He taught in the Granite School District for 35 years, the last 16 years at Taylorsville High School. He was the head swimming coach, assistant football coach, and assisted with track and field. He was voted the 5A Boys Swimming Coach of the Year in 1995-1996. Gordon was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He held many church positions: counselor in the bishopric, high priest group leader, stake athletic director, high councilman, teacher and veil worker at the Jordan River Temple. Gordon loved scouting and received the rank of Eagle Scout. Gordon and Millie were recently released from the Salt Lake Inner City Service Mission. Gordon was an avid sports enthusiast. He ran many miles, swam many laps, biked many paths, and was a devoted U of U fan! Gordon is survived by his wife Millie and children; Wade (Pamela), Kay, Karla (Bryan) Howe, Karen (Scott) Cummings and Ray (Kim), 18 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, his brother Darrell and sister Jean. He was proceeded in death by his infant son Michael, his parents, and his brother Arlow. Funeral services will be held on Saturday August 30th , 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Murray 16th Ward Chapel, 627 West 5750 South , Murray. Friends may call Friday from 6:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary at 4760 South State Street, Murray, and one hour prior to the funeral services at the church on Saturday. The family wishes to express special thanks to the staff of Brighton Gardens and Utah Hospice Specialists for their loving and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Coach O’s name to Taylorsville High School Athletic Department.
