View Funeral Webcast - Hyrum Henry Deters, age 87, Salt Lake City, Utah, finished serving others here on earth on December 9, 2020 at his home with his daughter Heidi watching over him as he valiantly fought cancer. He was born on March 30, 1933 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Fred and Ida Henning Deters. He graduated from West High School. He married Renee Turnbow on June 19, 1959 in the Salt Lake Temple. Hyrum was a hardworking man, loving husband, caring father, grandfather, great grandfather, and a true friend. He was always ready to tell you a story and could remember all the details of an event with just one picture. You couldn’t go anywhere with Hyrum without him knowing one or more people at any destination, be it grocery store or Disneyland. He shared his love of coin collecting with the family by giving each member two of the new state quarters as they came out. He was an extraordinary example of Christ-like service and was always ready to help with any project or to take care of any children in the family who needed watching. He enjoyed completing puzzles and word searches, playing church basketball and softball, waterskiing, boating, and taught many people to waterski in youth groups with much patience. He loved to collect hats, cars, and go to car shows with family. He could tell you everything about each car. He served in the United States Army. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in the West German Mission. Tears came to his eyes as he shared his testimony of his faithful parents who left their families in Germany to come to America to raise their children in the gospel. He served in many church callings including Deacons Quorum President, High Priest Group Leader, Seventies leadership, Sunday school teacher, Branch President three times during his mission, Bishopric, and loved to host church parties. After his wife passed away, he continued to prepare dinner every Sunday for his children, grandchildren, and his great grandchildren who had a special place in his heart. He especially loved sharing his lifesaver mints with the little ones when it was time for them to leave. Grandpa could be found at many school performances and activities supporting his grandchildren. Survived by; five children, Melanie (Kevin) Pierce, Kurt (Terri) Deters, Bart (Melanie) Deters, Heidi (Andy) Wold, Bret (Camille) Deters; son in law, Sanford Lewis; twenty-six grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Deters, and Elaine Miles. Preceded in death by his loving wife, Renee Turnbow; his daughter, Wendy Lewis, a grandson, Jesse Pierce; parents, Fred and Ida Henning Deters, his siblings, Ruth; John (Lillian); Hanna; Marion (Calvin) Rynearson; brother in law; Rey Miles. A public viewing will be held Tuesday, December 15th from 6:00-8:00 pm at Jenkins-Soffe Funeral Chapels, 1007 W. South Jordan Pkwy. (10600 S.), South Jordan, Utah. A private family funeral service will be held by invitation only on Wednesday, December 16th 1:00 pm. The funeral services can be viewed online at www.jenkins-soffe.com.
