John Orton Haymond Obituary (1939 - 2013)

John Orton Haymond (Jack to most who knew him), the greatest husband, father, son and grandpa finally is resting his gigantic heart that stopped giving on Tuesday, April 16, 2013. John was born on March 29, 1939 in Salt Lake City to his loving parents, John Wilkinson Haymond and Illene Orton Haymond. He was blessed to have a younger brother (Ronald Wilkinson Haymond) in his life, and they spent a magical childhood growing up in Garfield a wonderful heritage, and loved to get together with Garfield cronies and reminisce. Garfield is now part of the Kennecott Copper smelter property where dad spent 40+ years as a metallurgical engineer. He retired for two days, and then went to work for Bechtel Engineering which then became Tetra Tek; this is where he was still employed when he passed. As ill as he was, he still went on to work until it was absolutely impossible, but it was one of the major items on his "bucket" list, "to return to work." He was a very well respected and loved member of the "smelter" family, and made lots of good friends. Dad graduated from Cyprus High School in Magna, Utah in 1957, and then started his college career at the University of Utah 1958. Go Utes! Dad was a member of Phi Delta Theta where he served as president, and also was a member of the ROTC. This, in turn, resulted in his serving for six years in the United States army, stationed in Germany. He was able to do a lot of traveling, and even though mom nagged him about traveling to Europe, he said he'd "been there, done that" and was perfectly happy to stay in the good ole U.S.A. He then began his career at Kennecott. Dad met Sherry Moesser in 1967, and they were married on April 10, 1968, in Las Vegas, Nevada. She would be the love of his life from that day on. They celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on April 10th, six days before his passing. They welcomed two sons, Christopher and Michael, and dad just blossomed as a husband and father. He loved being a family man and supporting his boys in all their sports, scouting, and school activities. Both boys were on hockey travel teams, and dad and his family enjoyed lots of fun trips to competitive meets. Dad started the Murray High School hockey club in 1985, and was the manager for many years, staying on well after both boys finished school. He was ELATED when Murray finally won a state title a few years after he stopped managing. Dad was a second father to many of the players, and touched countless lives during this time. Jack was a member of the Monday Night Golf League at the Copper Club in Magna where he served as president for many years until his health prevented him from playing any more. He had the biggest heart of anyone and gave of his time and service to anyone who needed it. He is now relaxing on the "fairways in heaven…" Jack is survived by his devoted wife, his two sons, and five grandchildren who were the absolute joys of his life: Zachary, Kaden, Dominic, Anthony, and "Princess Nicole". Also survived by two nephews, Shay (Mickelle) and Doug, two nieces, Shellie and Jessica; sister-in-law Kay, and brother-in-law Joe. He loved his Utes and Jazz, and will be cheering them on as he watches over all of us from the best seats in the house. We will all miss you so much, and will honor you by being the best we can be. We'll see you again. Your loving family.
