Joseph L. Thorne, MD Obituary (1926 - 2016)

1926 ~ 2016 Joseph Leroy Thorne, Jr., son of Joseph Leroy Thorne and Ora West Thorne, passed away in the early morning hours of December 30, 2016 of causes incident to 90 years of age. He was born, raised and educated in Pleasant Grove, Utah, then a quiet, unassuming farming community. He was blessed with four sisters: Diane, Geraldene, Gayle and Charlyn. Joe joined the Navy Seabees in 1944, building landing strips in Guam. He was honorably discharged in April 1946. He began his college education at Utah State earning a B.S. degree. He then graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Veterinary Medicine. He taught Veterinary Medicine at Ohio State before deciding he would prefer to be a medical doctor. He graduated from the University of Utah Medical School and joined their staff as an Associate Professor of Medicine. At graduation from the University of Utah Medical School in 1961, he received the "Paul Wintrobe Award" for the outstanding student. He later left to practice at St. Mark's Hospital for 15 more years. He married Margaret Adams, and that union produced three children: Kaye Ann, Kent and David. They were divorced, and he later married Donna Taylor Thorne. Joe was most interested in his medical practice, his livestock and farming operations. He was most happy visiting with his patients and friends from everywhere in Montana and his trips to his beloved home in Dillon, Montana. He has left a legacy of hard work to achieve goals that would yield satisfaction of accomplishment to provide for one's self and family. He is survived by wife, Donna, children: Kaye Ann (Tom) Swallow, Kent (JoAnna) Thorne and David (Liz) Thorne; 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by stepchildren: David (Cindy) Eyre and Gayle (Norm) Jarvis. The family is appreciative to Donna Thorne for her care during his declining years. We also appreciate his many associates over the years and his recent caregivers. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, January 5, 2017, 12:00 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State Street, Murray, with a viewing from 11:00-11:45 a.m. prior to the services.
