Obituary for Joyce Chappell Pett

Loving Mother, Grandmother, Sister & Friend

Joyce Chappell Pett passed away peacefully on October 20, 2018 at home. Joyce was born on February 22, 1924 in Nephi, Utah to Robert Edward and Clara Elizabeth Chappell. Joyce attended Juab High School and graduated in 1942. Shortly after graduation she took a job with Juab County as an auditor. She soon became the Chief Deputy Clerk and later Clerk of the District Court. While working for Juab County she met her husband, Robert V. Pett. They were married on September 23, 1949 in the Manti Temple. Bob & Joyce moved to Salt Lake City in 1950. While Bob began his career with Kennecott, Joyce went to work as a bookkeeper. She later became the Credit Manager for IFA, a position she enjoyed and held for many years. Joyce was a member of the LDS Church, serving in many different callings including Relief Society President, Stake Secretary and Drama Director.

Joyce loved to travel and was fortunate to have visited many places throughout the United States. She had the perfect travel companion, her dear friend Carolyn Leavitt; they both enjoyed being called the “Bobbsey Twins” due to their matching attire. Joyce also enjoyed annual summer camping and fishing trips with her extended family. She treasured the annual Pett Family Christmas parties, family reunions and birthday gatherings.

Joyce was a talented artist who won many awards for her hand-painted ceramics at the Salt Lake County Fair. She loved to read and spend time with her children and grandchildren, never turning down a chance to play cards, a game of Memory or Spoons.

Joyce was a very strong and resilient woman who fought until the very end. She spent the last three years of her life in the care of her daughter, Cheryl. She is survived by her children, Mark Pett and Cheryl Varoz; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother (Fred), sister (Nina Bowers).

A graveside service will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, October 27, 2018, at the Murray City Cemetery. The family would like to acknowledge the kindness of their many friends and neighbors who so willingly offered their time and assistance on numerous occasions. The family also wishes to convey their sincerest thanks to the staff of Quality Hospice who so lovingly attended to Joyce’s needs during the last 9 months of her life.
