LeGrand (Grant) Sieverts Neerings Obituary (1930 - 2011)

LeGrand Sieverts Neerings (Grant) passed away January 6, 2011 and he was finally welcomed home by his Heavenly Father after enduring the final years of his life with Alzheimer’s disease. He is now free and we know we will someday see him again, as he was before the ravages of this wicked disease. LeGrand was born June 30, 1930 to Peter Wilhelmus and Neltje (Nelly) Sieverts Neerings in Salt Lake City, UT. LeGrand was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints his entire life and served an honorable mission in the Netherlands from 1950 to 1952. He later served a service mission with his wife, Coleene, to Nauvoo, IL in 1996 and then they served two stake missions in Salt Lake City and Ivins, UT. He had a strong testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and was always ready and willing to share it with others. LeGrand had married “the love of his life”, Coleene Coleman, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on January 27th, 1956. They are the parents of six children: Grant, Darren, Cal, Matt, Wyatt, and Colette. His pride and joy were his 24 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, which he loved with all his heart. He will be greatly missed by his family. LeGrand attended South High School, then was drafted into the Army in 1952 and served in the Korean War in Okinawa as a teletype operator. Throughout his working years he was a Plumbing and Heating Contractor, and then went to work for Zion’s Securities Corporation as a Supervisor of Maintenance there. He retired in 1992 after 30 years of faithful service. Following their mission to Nauvoo, LeGrand and Coleene moved to the Padre Lakes community in Ivins, UT. LeGrand dearly loved his retirement home there. LeGrand was a great example to his five sons and taught them a great work ethic. He also lived life to the fullest and loved boating and water skiing, Disneyland, gardening and traveling the world with Coleene. He had a great mechanical mind and could build or repair anything, as evidenced by building his home in Salt Lake City and his cabin near Summit Park. Most of all, he loved and cherished his wife of 55 years and as he often said, he “put her on a pedestal”, throughout his entire life. LeGrand is preceded in death by his parents; Peter Wilhelmus and Nelly Sieverts Neerings, his brother, Theodore Neerings and sister, Catherine Neerings Welchman. He is survived by his wife, Coleene; his six children, Grant (Lorri) Neerings, Darren (Laura) Neerings, Cal (Suzi) Neerings, Matt (Heather) Neerings, Wyatt (Kim) Neerings and Colette (Brett) Hussey. He is also survived by his siblings; Abraham Neerings and Cora Neerings Elggren. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 10th at 11:00 a.m. at the East Millcreek 2nd Ward, 3750 So. Hillside Lane (2500 E.). A viewing will be held Sunday evening from 5-7 pm at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, 1007 W. So. Jordan Pkwy (10600 So.) and on Monday from 10:00 – 10:45 am prior to services at the church. A memorial service will also be held in Ivins, UT on Wed. January 12th at 12:00 noon at the Padre Canyon Chapel Red Cliff 8th Ward, 625 E. Center St. Ivins, UT. with a viewing from 10:30 – 11:45 am prior to the services at the church. Interment will be in the Santa Clara Historical Cemetery, in Santa Clara, UT. The family wish to express their appreciation to LeGrand’s “other family” in the Veteran’s Nursing Home in Salt Lake City, the wonderful nurses and employees who took such extraordinary and loving care of LeGrand. He was treated with such dignity, respect and honor for who he was with them and who he had been in the past. It is way more than a job to them. They are heroes taking care of heroes and they do it every day. We thank them for all that was done for LeGrand. We also wish to thank Bristol Hospice for their exceptional care and kindness to both our family and also LeGrand.
