Lorale Gundry Hortin Obituary (1954 - 2020)

Lorale Hortin of Taylorsville UT, age 65, passed away April 5, 2020. She was born May 25, 1954 in Salt Lake City Utah to Donald M. and Phyllis Gundry. She graduated from South High School and afterwards she met and married Scott Hortin. They were married on May 18th 1973. They moved to Coalville Utah, where they lived for 5 years. She got a job as a dispatcher for Summit County Police and Fire. While living there they had “the twins” Christy and Misty. After 5 years they moved to Kearns Utah where they had their 3rd daughter, Angela “the baby”. She got a job with South Salt Lake Police and Fire dispatch. She worked there for several years before getting a job with Hercules (later ATK) where she worked for 29 years. Lor and Scott moved to Taylorsville in 1993. Lor loved to garden, and spent a lot of time working in her flower beds. She was very close to her family, and enjoyed spending time with them all at family parties. She loved to read and we spent a lot of time at the library when her kids were young. Lor would watch the news every day, and she knew the names of every reporter and news anchor on every channel. She was very detail oriented and would tell very detailed (therefore long) stories. She loved all of the holidays and would go all out decorating the house for them. She loved being a Grandma and spending time with her grandkids was one of her greatest joys. Every year on her grandkids birthday she would take them to Build-A-Bear and spoil them. Most of her adult life she didn’t really watch TV, but when she started to get sick, she watched HGTV and could watch it all day long. She could tell you all about the show and people on it within minutes of it starting. She loved to talk with people and could strike up a conversation with almost anyone. She had been sick for many years with liver failure, but just two short months ago on February 1st we got the call saying they had a liver for her. She was fighting hard to make a full recovery and was making a lot of progress. Unfortunately, for unknown reasons she was taken away from us suddenly. We are so grateful to her liver donor for giving her the gift of a new liver. We would like to encourage everyone to sign up to be an organ donor. She is survived by her husband Scott, her Daughters Misty Hortin, Christy Hortin, and Angela Hortin Pace. She has 5 grandchildren, MaKenzie, Caden, Paislee, Kaylee and Keegan. Also survived by her siblings: Marva (Dave) Williams, Don (Kim) Gundry, Dean (Kae) Gundry, Darryl Gundry and David Gundry; As well as her in-laws that she considered her own brothers and sisters: Sylvia Mortensen, Lisa (Darby) McLean, Jeff (Vicki) Hortin. She has many beloved nieces and nephews and so many close friends. She is proceeded in death by her Parents, sisters Roileen Gundry and Carollynn Fausett. Due to COVID-19, a small viewing will be held by invitation only. Graveside services will be held at 1pm on Friday April 10th at the Coalville City Cemetery. She told us multiple occasions after her transplant that she wanted to have a “new liver party”, so once we are able to, we will have a celebration of life/new liver party for her. We will send out more details on this at a later date. Her family would like to thank Lor’s long time health providers, Dr. Sheridan, Dr. Chamberlain and Deb Plasman for taking such good care of her. Her three daughters would like to thank our dad for taking such good care of her. These last few years have been very rough, and you have always taken great care of her. We don’t know what we would have done without you keeping track of all of her appointments, medications, insurance nightmares, and running the house on your own. We appreciate you so very much.
