Nathan LeRoy Bankhead Obituary (1918 - 2013)

Nathan, second born of nine children to Nathan and Henrietta Leggroan Bankhead. Nate entered this world on February 6, 1918. He attended Lincoln Elementary and graduated from Murray High School, where he was very active in sports. Growing up in Murray as a youngster, Nate worked at the old Iris theatre. He served 2 years in the U.S. military, attached to the Army's 23rd QM Car company in the Rhinland Central Europe Campaign, European African Middle Eastern Service, and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of CPL. After discharge from the military service, Nate worked at the Murray Smelters, then as a pipefitter for Kennecott Copper in Magna. Upon retirement, Nate spent much of his time helping friends and acquaintances in need. Assisting and giving help to those less fortunate, getting them back and forth to medical appointments, while helping others with daily living was his passion. He is survived by brothers; Eugene, William and Stanley; sisters, Lila Bankhead and Nancy Caldwell; an adopted daughter Charmaine Wyatt; also many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; sisters, Helen Stewart, and Afton Ellis; brother, Robert, and several nephews and a niece. Thanks and much appreciation to St. Mark's Hospital and Garden Terrace Care Center, for their loving care and attention, where Nate spent his last weeks. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, March 19th, at 12 Noon, at Larkins Sunset Gardens, 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy. Viewings will be held Monday, March 18th from 6-8 p.m. and Tuesday, 10:30-11:00 a.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State Street, Murray. Interment: Larkin Sunset Gardens.
