Perena Delliskave Icabazzi Obituary (1917 - 2010)

Gramma / Aunt PerenaPerena Delliskave Icabazzi passed away peacefully November 2, 2010. She was the third of six children born in Tooele, Utah on November 18th, 1917 to Felix and Lucia DiPetro Delliskave. After her birth, the family moved to Murray, Utah. She met Donato Iacobazzi (Bari, Italy) who was working in Ely, NV They married in September of 1939, one son, William Phillip, was born there. Three years later they moved near Perena’s family in Murray. Perena worked for Albertson’s as head sales lady in the Bakery Dept. Long hours were required of her especially at holiday times.Except for the three years in Ely, Perena lived her entire life either at her family home or a block away where she and Dan built one then a newer home. They paid off their houses in short order, saved money regularly and always paid cash for their cars. She was well into her 50’s before she ever had a credit card that she rarely used and paid off monthly. When Dan was alive they always had a beautiful garden. She even gave her granddaughter’s husband, Graham, a lesson in vegetable gardening when she visited them in Washington at their 1,000 acre hops, apples and grapes farm.After her retirement from Albertson’s, Perena volunteered at St. Vincent Catholic School for 21 years in the 2nd and 3rd grades. She became an expert in crocheting. Many Afghans were given out over the years for birthday and wedding gifts. With farming in her blood, she spent many weekends at the Farmer’s Market in Murray Park helping her brother Ralph who farmed until he was 90, sell his produce. The loves of her life were her grandchildren Peter and Andreana. They were Grandma’s delight and could do no wrong. She always had a variety of homemade Italian cookies at the ready in the freezer while they were growing up, from biscotti and pizzelle to zucchini cookies. No one ever left Grandma’s house hungry—her pasta, too, was legendary.Although generous to her family, she was thrifty and always lived well within her means. Family and the Catholic Church meant everything to her throughout her long life. She liked to occasionally gamble in Wendover, NV, was an avid baseball and Jazz basketball fan and would get so anxious and mad at a loss she would turn the game off before it was over and go to bed.She is survived by her daughter-in-law Midge Galeazzi, two grandchildren, Peter J. Iccabazzi of Salt Lake City, UT, and Andreana Gamache (Graham) of Wapato, WA., two great-grandchildren, Amara and Anabelle Gamache also of Wapato, WA., and numerous nieces and nephews, most related and some not. She is preceded in death by her husband Dan, her son Bill, and her brother, Ralph, sisters Lena, Phyllis and recently Eva. One brother, John Delliskave lives in the Salt Lake area. She will be missed by her friends in the Golden Club, Catholic S.W.O.R.D.S. and the Sewing Club (of 60 years).The family is grateful to and wishes to thank the devoted nurses and staff at Spring Creek Rehab Center, Atria Assisted Living, and Sunbrook Hospice for their loving care.A viewing where friends may call will be held at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State in Murray from 6-8 p.m. with a Holy Rosary following at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov.5th. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church 1385 E. Spring Lane in Holladay at 11:00 a.m. Saturday Nov. 6 and interment will be at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Salt Lake City. A lunch will be held at the Benvegnu Center, St. Vincent’s Church after the burial for family and friends who wish to attend.In lieu of flowers, please send contributions in Perena’s name to St. Vincent’s Catholic School…1385 East Spring Lane, Holladay, Utah 84117.There will be a giant hole left in the hearts of her family by her absence at all holidays, birthdays and family reunions…good bye gramma/Aunt Perena…we’ll miss you and your yummy Italian cooking.
