Obituary for Robert W. Springman

Robert W. Springman (Col. Retired - US Army,) age 87, passed away at home in his sleep on October 1, 2018, sliding into home plate having used every ounce of his body to the fullest. Bob was born April 30, 1931 in Casper, Wyoming to John A. Springman and Mildred L. Roth. At age 8 his family moved to Salt Lake City. Bob attended Granite High School and excelled at athletics, including baseball and basketball. He received a full-ride basketball scholarship to Utah State where he joined the ROTC program.

Bob married Norma Jean Thomas and together they had four children. They divorced after 13 years. He married the love of his life, Janet Louise Meese, his Janibug, on August 6, 1963.

Upon graduation from Utah State, Bob joined the US Army and began a career that spanned 30 years, took him to Germany, Vietnam for 2 tours of duty, Peru, Colombia, and many US posts. He served as US Army Attache at the Peruvian Embassy for 3 years and as Chief of the US Military Mission in Colombia for 3 years. Upon his retirement from the Army, Bob and Jan returned to Salt Lake City where he sold real estate for several years.

Bob and Jan joined the First Presbyterian Church congregation in 1993, where they developed many wonderful friendships and a great devotion to God.

Bob was a lifelong sports enthusiast and an avid fan of the Utah Jazz, the University of Utah Utes, and the Utah State Aggies. He went bird hunting with relatives and friends in Iowa and Nebraska, fishing for halibut and salmon in Alaska, and golfing. He and Jan spent many winters on the beach in San Carlos, Mexico, enjoying the sunshine and their fishing boat, Son Seeker.

Bob’s memory was impeccable and he was a wonderful storyteller that rarely told the same story twice. During the last month of his life, his short term memory completely left him and it was frustration with that loss that finally allowed him to be ready to leave.

Bob is survived by his loving wife, Jan, by his four children, John (Chris), Mike, Pat, Mary (Brent), 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved big sister, Edith.

A celebration of his life will take place Saturday, October 13 at 11:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church, 12 C Street, in Salt Lake City followed by a luncheon at First Pres. Bob will be buried with full military honors at Redwood Memorial Estates, 6500 S Redwood Road, at 2:00 on the same day.
