Rolla (Raleigh) Wickel Obituary (1922 - 2011)

“Raleigh”Rolla (Raleigh) Wickel passed away on August 10, 2011 after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s. He was born July 1, 1922 to Willard and Sylvia Wake Wickel in Conner Creek (Elba), Idaho. He married LaRue Scott Wickel on August 25, 1941. They lived on the Wickel family ranch in Conner Creek (Elba), Idaho, where Raleigh was raised. Raleigh and LaRue moved to Salt Lake City in 1944 where Raleigh worked for Denver Rio Grande Railroad as a carman for 40 years. During his retirement years, he enjoyed gardening with his son, spending time with friends and family and, most of all, walking every day at the mall with his sweet wife and dear friends. Raleigh will forever be remembered for his great sense of humor and incredible willingness to help anyone in need. Wherever there was a job that needed to be done, Raleigh could be counted on! His family will fondly remember him for his love and concern for the well-being of his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.Raleigh was preceded in death by his wife; parents; two brothers; and one sister. He is survived by his sons, Barry R. Wickel (Linda), Sherman L. Wickel (Cheryl), Gary Scott Wickel (Angela), 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one nephew; and one niece. We are going to miss our sweet father and grandfather. Raleigh is home now, worry-free and walking in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.We would like to thank those who cared for Raleigh (and the family) – Eclipse Home Health, Canyon Creek Assisted Living and Highland Care Center. We would also like to thank Raleigh and LaRue’s close friends of 19 years for their love and support of both Raleigh and LaRue through the recent difficult times.Graveside services will be held at Murray City Cemetery, 5600 So.
