To view a video tribute for Shirl Jay Mower, please click here. "Poppers” Shirl Jay Mower passed away January 29, 2006 following a stroke in July and complications from diabetes. He was born May 30, 1924 in Castle Dale, Utah to James Albert Mower and Mary Lucy Nay. He married Lola Beth Peterson January 25, 1947, solemnized in the Manti Temple May 19, 1962. His sweetheart preceded him in death on December 13, 1986. He loved all kinds of sports and helped organize one of the first Murray Little League teams in Murray. He played football for Murray High School the first year the team won the State Championship. He was an avid golfer, bowler, and baseball player. His latest passion was poker where he brightened the table of many tournaments of Texas Holdem. His other passion was vacationing with his family, hunting, fishing, camping, RVing, etc. He never missed a year going on vacation with his family. Veteran of WWII, heavy artillery division. Employed by Kennecott and Intermountain Electric as an odometer mechanic. Retired 1986. Survivors: Children: Danny Jay Mower, Denver, CO., Pamela Beth (Mark) Thompson, Murray, Heidi Lynne (Arlan) Goldstein, Murray. Grandchildren: Jim Troutman, Shara Lynn (Shane) Anderson, Joclyn Laney, Patrick Ryan Laney. Great-Grandchild, Kristian David Anderson. Proceeded in death by two sisters and four brothers. Services will be Saturday, February 4, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. in the Murray 29th Chapel, 6320 South 700 West. Friends may call from 6:00-9:00 p.m. on Friday at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 So. State Street, and from 11:30-12:30 on Saturday at the church. Interment Murray City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations made to the American Diabetes Association, 1245 E. Brickyard, Suite #30, SLC, UT 84106. The Broken Chain We little knew that morning, God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone, For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us beautiful memories, your love is still our guide, and though we cannot see you, you are always by our side.
