Sophie Petroff Stephens Obituary (1926 - 2016)

Sophie Stephens died Saturday, October 1, 2016. She left behind a body that limited her joy in life the past few years. She grew up a child of the Great Depression, careful and conservative to her last breath but generous in heart and spirit. She always appreciated a person with a great sense of humor and loved to hear about the lives of family and friends. She was sharp and alert to the very end. Married in 1946 to Clarence Robert "Bob" Stephens, they lived a busy life in Ohio, New Jersey and Minnesota before they both retired from 3M and headed south to Arizona. Following Bob's death, she moved to Utah in 2001 and loved the people and sense of community in the Salt Lake Valley. Many thanks to the staff at Copperview Medical, her friends at Legacy Rehabilitation Center and the doctors and nurses at St. Mark's, Jordan Valley and IMC hospitals. She is survived by her daughter, Ellen (Doug) Haslam; sister, Bessie Petroff; granddaughters in her heart: Kim (Jon) Viator and Annette (Jack) Sommer; plus many nieces and nephews all mourn her passing. She joins her husband, Bob; son, Kenneth Russell Stephens, siblings, Russell Petroff and Dorothy Domokur, and those who loved her throughout their lives and went before to throw a great welcome home party. Her memorial service will be held Thursday, October 6, 2016 at 10:30 AM at Mountain Vista United Methodist Church, 8931 S. 3200 W., West Jordan, UT. The family welcomes visitors one hour prior to the service. She will be laid to rest next to her husband and son in Sun City West, AZ. In lieu of flowers, donations would be welcome to the Salvation Army, your local animal shelter or Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, UT. Flowers always made her cry because they died too soon.
