Stuart Phillip Sutherland Obituary (1953 - 2018)

Stuart Sutherland was born on Nov. 7, 1953, in Princeton, NJ. He passed away on July 19, 2018. He lived in Tualatin, OR, and is buried in the Ben Lomond Cemetery in North Ogden, UT. Stuart graduated from Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, AZ in 1971. A veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, he served active duty from 1972-1976 aboard the U.S.C.G. Midgett, with additional years of service in the Coast Guard Reserves. He was the president of Sutherland HDL, Inc., with over 25 years of experience as a world expert and educator in hardware design language. He is the author of numerous papers and books which have left a marked technical legacy in his field. Among Stuart’s remarkable life achievements, he served three full-time LDS missions. He served from 1976-1978 in Frankfurt, Germany and Zurich, Switzerland; he also served with his wife LeeAnn in Halifax, Canada from 2009-2011, as well as Tacoma, WA from 2016-2018. He volunteered at the Coffee Creek Correctional Facility for several years. Stuart enjoyed motocross racing as a young man and cycling in later life, completing the 205-mile Seattle to Portland ride in one day for six years. Stuart is survived by his wife of 37 years, LeeAnn N. Sutherland, and their five children: Ammon G. Sutherland, Tamara H. Sutherland, Hannah M. Trujillo, Seth A. Sutherland, and Samuel S. Sutherland, as well as ten grandchildren. Above all else, Stuart cherished his family and the gospel of Christ. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
