Obituary for Velda Murdock Peterson

Velda Murdock Peterson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, joined her loving husband as she passed peacefully on October 2, 2018. She was surrounded by her 5 children.

She was born February 21, 1922 to Daniel Lewis Murdock and Annie Pearl Jones at their home in Thomas, Idaho. Her childhood was spent on the family farm where she learned the homemaking skills that would serve her future family. She graduated from Utah State University with a degree in Home Economics in the spring of 1944 and then taught high school in Shelley, Idaho. Following the War, she married her sweetheart, George Ancle Peterson on June 19, 1946 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.

Velda’s greatest accomplishment in life was her family. She loved being a mother and served her family with love and compassion. She sewed like a professional and loved making clothes for her family. She cooked scrumptious meals, worked in her yard, and vegetable garden and then preserved what she grew, and served her friends and neighbors. She served a mission with her husband to the Philippines from 1980-1981 and then a second mission to the Atlanta, Georgia LDS Temple from 1988-1990. Later they were temple workers in the Jordan River LDS temple.

Velda was loved by her family and her friends. She loved being of service to others and practicing charity to her fellowman often in the form of her legendary homemade bread and pies. She is survived by 5 children: Jeanne Benson, Daryl Peterson, Kim Peterson, Trudy Soffe, and Daneen Viehweg, 19 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Bart and adoring husband.

A viewing will be held Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at Little Cottonwood LDS Stake Center (1535 East Creek Road, Cottonwood Heights, UT) from 6:00-8:00 PM. A brief viewing will be held on Wednesday, October 10 at the Stake Center from 9:00 to 9:45 AM followed by the funeral at 10:00 AM. Interment at Riverside/Thomas Idaho Cemetery, October 10, 2018 at 4:00 pm.

The family would like to thank the caregivers (Sela, Latu, and Kina) who lovingly cared for Velda in her home that she loved so much. The family is also very grateful to Inspiration Hospice.
