Victor Moss Norton Obituary (1929 - 2018)

Victor Moss Norton, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away peacefully surrounded by those most important to him. Victor lived his childhood in the central valley of California with his parents and 6 brothers and sisters. He graduated from Oakdale High School in 1948 where he played football and was voted most handsome in his class. Upon graduation Victor attended Modesto Jr. College. He served in the Army branch of the armed services as a First Lieutenant. He had a great respect for his country and was proud to serve. Victor married Leila Pope also a central valley resident. They moved to San Jose, California where he attended San Jose State University graduating with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in education. Life was challenging for Leila and him but they grew in their love and commitment towards each other. He began his career in Los Gatos and Cupertino, California as a teacher, vice principal and principal. He was viewed by his colleagues as an innovative and distinguished educator. He and Leila later returned to Turlock, California where he continued his career as a school principal and superintendent in the Hilmar Unified School District. The district received the distinguished school award from the State of California. He also participated with Stanford University, the University of Southern California and New York Medical College in pioneering programs for children with special needs and in generating computer assisted learning. Victor came out of retirement from public education to serve as provost for Southern Virginia College where he designed accreditation guidelines and job descriptions for college administration. He loved that assignment as well as living on the east coast. He was life time member of the educational fraternity Phi Delta Kappa. Victor was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served as a sunday school teacher, a member of the elders quorum presidency, a high council member, a bishopric member, and as a bishop. He served as a service missionary at the newly opened Joseph Smith building. He was a wonderful and conscientious home teacher. The happiest times of his life however was when his two daughters, Victoria and Susan, were born. Later, his two grandchildren Lisa and Joseph, were born. His grandchildren were his life. He served as a football coach to Joseph. He adored his great grandson Noah. Victor enjoyed painting and left art work to all of his immediate family members. He was a potter, gardener, and avid football fan, enjoyed traveling, reading, and spending time with his family. He continued to research and learn all the way to the end of his life. Victor will be missed. He as loved and cherished by many. We know he is continuing on in spirit from accepting and enjoying the life beyond. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 13, 2018 at 11:00 am at the River Ridge 1st Ward Chapel, 10124 South 1300 West, South Jordan, UT. A viewing will be held Wednesday December 12, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley 1007 W. South Jordan Pkwy and at the church Thursday from 10:00 -10:45 am. Interment South Jordan Cemetery.
