Woodrow (Woody) Freeman Smith Obituary (1917 - 2008)

Born 9 Oct 1917, in Henrieville UT to Allen Freeman and Dorothy Jane Welker Smith. He died Wed, 12 Mar 2008 at the age of 90. Raised in Henrieville Utah until the depression forced his family to relocate to St. Anthony ID. Was a member of the CCCs and drove a logging truck in the Boise Idaho area. Married Dorothy Welker and moved to San Diego CA where two daughters were born. During WWII, he worked constructing the B-24 bomber aircraft. Woody and Dorothy divorced in 1946. After the war, moved back to St. Anthony where he married Bessie Briggs Broadhurst. Bessie had two daughters making a total of four. To this union was born a son in 1947. Woodrow applied for work at Hill AFB in Utah and he moved his family to Utah in 1951 where two more children—a girl and a boy—were born to them. Bessie and these two children died in 1963. On 16 June 1967, Woody married Ila L. Finn Waters in Murray Utah and they were sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple, on 9 Oct 1976. Ila’s three daughters were added to the family. Woody retired from Hill AFB in 1979. He and Ila became known as “Snowbirds” living in Murray UT during the summer and traveling to Arizona for the winter. They traveled extensively throughout the western states, had many wonderful adventures and loved and lived life to the fullest. They did this for many years until their health prevented it. Woody and Ila served two missions for the LDS Church--one at the granite records vault, the other as ward missionaries. Woody is survived by his eternal companion, Ila. Only death could separate them. He is also survived by his children—Terri Moran, Kaysville UT; Sande Caldwell, Portland OR; and Boyd (Linda) Smith, Sunset UT; four step-daughters--Wilma Schultz, Brady NE; Connie Edwards, Kent, WA; Eunice (Veto) Montrone, Kearns UT; and Betty Swensen, South Jordan UT; 10 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, one great-great grand child, and a brother, Lynn Smith and a sister, Dorothy Tyler. Preceded in death by his parents; one brother, five sisters, one step-daughter, one grand-daughter, and two great-granddaughters. Funeral services will be held on Monday, 17 March 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Murray 12th Ward, 363 E. Vine Street. A viewing will be held Sunday evening from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 So. State St., and Monday from 10:00-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment: Murray City Cemetery.
