Melvin (Mel) Douglas Worthen passed away peacefully early in the morning on November 22nd, 2020. Mel was a loving son, brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to all he met. He was born in Panguitch, Utah where he spent much of his younger years. His parents eventually moved the family to the Salt Lake Valley where he attended West High School. He had one older sister (Louise) and three younger brothers (Gene, Bob and Rick). Mel would go on to marry his high school sweetheart Darlene where they then settled in Taylorsville, Ut with their four children (Paula, Sherrie, Mark and Michael). Mel spent an impressive 45 years working at Litton Guidance and Control, now known as Northrop Grumman. Upon his retirement, Mel moved full-time to the family cabin located in Joe’s Valley, Utah. The cabin was dreamed up and designed by Mel and built alongside his family and countless friends. For decades it was known as the gathering place and provided so many happy memories for those who had visited. All were welcome there and Mel always had a friendly smile along with some interesting stories to share (from fun to colorful). At his cabin, he enjoyed everything the outdoors could offer from fishing (lake and fly-fishing), hunting, boating, horseback riding, ATV trips, Jeeping the trails and so much more. He loved the Utah mountains and experienced it all… \r\n \r\nMel was best known for his knack of fixing and creating things. He was constantly working on something and always happy to assist anyone that needed help; from repairing cars, fridges, motors or whatever had an issue. He will forever be fondly remembered as ‘Mel-Gyver’ by his friends and family. He was an extremely giving person and loved to help when able. Many of his inventions are still in use today. \r\n\r\nMel was preceded in death by his mother and father (Douglas and Myrtle), brother (James) and daughter (Sherrie). \r\nMel is survived by his partner Mary Ellen Eastman and his wife of 46 years Darlene Worthen (divorced), children: Paula Symes (Gregg), Mark Worthen (Renee), Mike Worthen (Melissa), grandchildren: Candice, Jessie, Colby, Brandon, Michael, Audra and Maegan as well as multiple great grandchildren. \r\nDue to current Covid times, there will be no formal gathering or services performed until later in 2021. An official interment of his ashes will be held at his cabin in the form of a Celebration of His Life. In the meantime, the family asks for letters of memories of Mel and his life (from simple to as long as needed). They would greatly appreciate seeing their dad through the eyes of those he had impacted most over his lifetime. Please email your stories to his son Mike at firstname.lastname@example.org.
