Obituary for Calvin John Ruben

Calvin John Ruben left this world wearing his work boots, straw hat and trademark suspenders. Always at the ready to lend a helping hand, Cal was constantly on the lookout for neighbors in need. His children served as his side-kicks, and their experiences compelled them to develop a good work ethic and a positive attitude—whether they wanted it or not. “The family that sweats together sticks together,” was Cal’s mantra.
Calvin was born to Constance (Connie) Mary Kresser and Edward Joe Ruben, December 31, 1964—just in time for his parents to receive a much-appreciated tax deduction. He ended up the very middle of seven children, but his energetic spirit kept him from going unnoticed. He collected all kinds of hobbies—model trains, leatherworking, playing the piano, computer programming, and most especially, gardening.
On August 13, 1987 he married Michelle Lynette Sessions in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they created, not only a true partnership, but five remarkable children—Matthew and Lindsey, Ashley and Matthew (Farnsworth), Christopher, Richard and Robert. This cohesive clan became the local do-gooders for all their unsuspecting neighbors—installing sprinkling systems, fixing roofs, and cultivating multiple neighborhood gardens. Together they found joy in working hard and playing hard.
While his service projects kept him plenty busy, electrical engineering was Calvin’s day job. He was known for his brilliant mind and tenacious work ethic. Even before graduating in Electrical Engineering from the University of Utah, Cal was recruited by Evans and Sutherland to work in their flight simulator division. Later, he was employed by Altera and Intel. Although he was known as a high achiever, he hadn’t the slightest whiff of pretention—preferring his daily uniform of old jeans and a T-shirt rather than a shirt and tie.
In 2010 Cal was diagnosed with rare GIST cancer, proving that he truly was a one-in-a-million kind of guy. Rather than plummeting into fear and self-pity, he was galvanized by the disease. As the cancer abraded his health, he defiantly continued to preserve his garden’s prodigious produce, whip up his Christmas pecan logs, and throw neighborhood ice cream socials.
“If you ever feel sorry for yourself, find someone to serve,” Calvin asserted. His life embodied service and Christ-like love for his fellowmen.
Survived by wife, Michelle; children; grandchildren, Alissa and Caleb; mother; and siblings Paul and Marianne, David and Elizabeth; Mark and Laurie; Brian and Pamela; Lynda and Douglas (Horne); Russell and Taeko. Calvin and Michelle’s two youngest children are currently serving LDS missions—Robert (Lyon, France) and Richard (Botswana/Namibia). Preceded in death by his father.
