Obituary for Judith Barlow Murdock Chamberlain

Judith Barlow Murdock Chamberlain passed away on March 5, 2018 after battling acute kidney failure. She was born on October 28, 1940 to Chase Hatch Murdock and Lucille Rogers Barlow in Cedar City Utah. Judith had a wonderful childhood, growing up in Beaver Utah and graduated from Beaver High School in 1958. She attended Utah State University, graduating with her Bachelor of Science in Family Life/Child Development and Elementary Education in 1962. She later earned a Master’s degree in School Counseling in 1994. She married Gary Franke Chamberlain in the Salt Lake Temple on August 15, 1963. They bought their first home in Midvale and settled in South Jordan, Utah where they raised their six children.
Judith worked as an elementary school teacher in the Jordan School District from1962-1971. In 1985, she returned to teaching Special Education for the Granite School District. Judy found great joy in teaching and helping others.
Judith was always active in the LDS church. She loved helping others and was a great example of compassionate service. Her favorite callings included adult/youth Sunday school teacher, relief society teacher, compassionate service leader and relief society president.
In her early life she worked in her father’s grocery store, was active in 4-H, music, and was a year book editor. In college, Judy was a member of the AOPi sorority, SPURS, and yearbook staff. She then interned with the Merrill Palmer Institute of Family Life and Child Development in Detroit, Michigan.
Judy’s greatest joys came from spending time with family, friends, and students. She was a proud “Utah State Aggie”, and continued her relationship with the school throughout her life as a football season ticket holder and an active alumni committee member to support and strengthen USU athletics. She also enjoyed travel, including everything from European vacations to simple road trips where time in the car was the primary event. Flower gardening was important to her, even late in life, when she couldn’t do it on her own, hiring friends and family to do it for her. Family history was a specialty for her. She heavily involved herself in genealogy and was always looking for opportunity to learn and share her knowledge and stories. She also had a passion for reading. She looked forward to her monthly meetings with book club and her “Red Hat” friends. Most important of all were her “children”, especially her grandchildren. “Grandma Judy” would beam with happiness with every visit, and display gifts of art and crafts with pride.
Judith is preceded in death by her parents Chase and Lucille, husband Gary, and brother Craig. She is survived by her children Dave (Kim), Garth, Michael (Traci), Brian (Stephanie), Roger (Jennifer), and Ann (Michael); 16 grandchildren Jessica (Ian), Alyssa, Britany, Morgan, Abigail, Isabella, Chase, Elizabeth, Nathan, Grace, Olivia, Megan, Simon, Christopher, and Veronica; 3 great-grandchildren Charli, Anthony, and Amelia. She is also survived by Virginia (Reed-deceased) Willyard, Roger (Adele) Murdock, (Christina) Murdock, Ron (Cheryl) Chamberlain, Carol (Marvin) Boase.
