Obituary for Frederick Kent (Bud) Hanney

Our beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather and great, great, grandfather passed away peacefully at the age of 88 at home surrounded by his family on April 10, 2018. He was born in Eureka, Utah on June 17, 1929 to Karl Gottfried Hanney and Beatrice Mae Franks Hanney. The family later moved to Midway, Utah and Kent would tell stories of working on the farm and how much he loved his horse, Lady and his dog, Queeny. When Kent was 16 years old, he contracted Polio and endured treatment for a full year in the Salt Lake County hospital. Because he had a lot to accomplish in his life, his Heavenly Father blessed him and he was able to walk out of the hospital without the need of walking aids. The family moved to Milford, Utah, where Kent met Doris Duveen McCulley and they married on December 3, 1947. At the age of 21, Kent joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and he and Duveen were then able to seal their family together forever on December 3, 1951 in the Manti Temple. Kent and Duveen later moved their family to Murray, Utah.

Kent worked for 40 years and was very successful in the insurance industry where he met many people and because of his honesty and integrity made many lifelong friends. He devoted his life to serving in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as bishop, in a stake presidency, a sealer in the Jordan River Temple and as a stake patriarch. Since becoming a patriarch in 2001 he was honored to bestow 458 blessings. He especially loved serving in the Jordan River Temple sealing families together forever. Many of his grandchildren received their patriarchal blessing from their grandfather and they were also very fortunate to have him seal them to their celestial companions to begin their eternal family. He often talked of “his” sealing groups and how much he loved serving with them.

Kent was a dedicated, patient and a very loving father. He was a great example of kindness, forgiveness and friendship to all that knew him. We as his children are blessed to call him “dad” and will be forever grateful for that blessing. Our hearts are heavy at this time of loss but we are overjoyed with the knowledge that he has been reunited with our mother and they are once again standing hand in hand watching over us.

Kent is survived by his five children, Michael Hanney, Leslie Hanney Shaw, David (Lorri) Hanney, Sherrie (Tom) Blodgett, and Marianne (Lewis) DeLange, 22 grandchildren, 58 great grandchildren and five great, great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his siblings, Tom Hanney, Beverly Chedister, Sally Tucker, and his great granddaughter Demetria Shaw.

To celebrate Kent’s life a viewing will be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2018, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 S. State Street, Murray. Funeral services will be held at the Belview Ward chapel, 6300 South 300 East, Murray, on Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. preceded by a special viewing from 9:30 -10:45 a.m. Interment will be at the Murray City Cemetery.
