Obituary for Jeffrey Scott Richins

(Jeffery) Scott Richins, my beautiful blonde, blue-eyed love, passed away on Thursday, April 12, 2018 peacefully at home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with liver cancer. Born on May 9, 1956 in Murray, Utah to Ray and Jean Richins, he was his mother’s Mother’s Day gift. As a kid, he loved fishing, riding his bike, his paper route, and going to school. He loved to attend the group sing-a-long before school, sometimes leaving home to make it on time without combing his hair. He said he didn’t care; he just wanted to be there to sing because he loved it so much. He enjoyed science projects and math, and I think this is what made him such a great carpenter later in life.

He had 2 children at a young age, and joined the Army at 16 years old during the Vietnam War. He earned 2 awards during his service; the National Defense Service Medal and the Marksman Badge with Automatic Rifle Bar. He was honorably discharged in 1974. After leaving the service, he went to work as a carpenter, building homes for a living.

I met Scotty, my love in 1980, and we decided to make a home and a life together. He told me then that if I would stay with him for 10 years, he would marry me. To this end, on July 14, 1990, in between good fishing and hunting, camping and snowmobiling, I married the love of my life in front of our friends and family in our front yard. He told me then that he should have said 20 years!

In 1987, while owning his Satellite TV business in Kemmerer, Wyoming, he happened on a lovely piece of land which he bought and built the home of my dreams, by hand; the carpenter in him creating a piece of heaven in the mountains. Being across from Lake Viva Naughton gave him all the fishing he would ever want, and the beautiful mountain location gave him the hunting and outdoor life he had always loved. In 1991, we were blessed with an adorable grandson and Scott reveled in teaching him all the things he had learned as a young boy from his mom: hunting, fishing, 4-wheeler riding, snowmobiling and all things enjoyed in nature. Scott loved his grandson and they were best friends. He enjoyed all his Wendover friends, the pool, the concerts, and especially the Romanza Halibut. Fifteen years ago Scott and I became owners of FSI Mortgage where he loved being the creative side of the company. I loved working side by side with my best friend and making a life we both dreamed of.

We have had a wonderful life and would have loved it to go on so much longer if his liver had not failed him. He fought courageously and made all the choices he needed to, but sadly, a liver transplant was not forthcoming. His contagious smile, easy going manner, and forthright personality made him easy to love, and easier to adore. I will miss his wisdom and wittiness and cannot believe 38 years can go so fast.

He is survived by me, Sabra Richins; his grandson, Justin Escarciga; son, Jeff Richins (Whitney); sister, Pat Kirberg (Kent); and 2 brothers, a siste-in-law, and my family of 6 sisters, 2 brothers, nieces and nephews from both sides, all who loved and adored him. He was preceded in death by his Mom, Jean; his Dad, Ray; and his brother, Jim.
