Obituary for James T. Holyoak

James T. Holyoak, age 92, passed away on June 5, 2018 in Salt Lake City, from causes incident to age, just one week after the death of his dear wife, Ilona.

Jim was born on Nov. 1, 1925 in Cedar City, Utah, the only child of Nelson D. (Dell) and Rachel Jane Barton Holyoak. He attended grade school in Paragonah and Lund, Utah and junior high and high school in Cedar City. He married Ilona Morgan from Beaver, Utah on Nov. 23, 1946 in the St. George Temple. Jim enlisted in the Army Air Corps in October 1943, was called to active duty in January 1944, and served until November 1945. He flew 34 combat missions over Germany as a ball turret gunner in a B-17 “Flying Fortress” bomber in the 8th Air Force, stationed in England. He was awarded the Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 42 ½ years, beginning in 1942 as a student telegrapher and retiring as Assistant Chief Train Dispatcher in 1984.

Jim was active in the LDS church, serving as bishop of the Salt Lake South Cottonwood 4th Ward for 5 ½ years and in many other leadership positions. He also volunteered in the Jordan River Temple for 23 ½ years. Jim and Ilona volunteered for several years in the member locator department at the Church Office Building.

Jim and Ilona resided in Lund, Delta, Milford and Salt Lake City, Utah, and in Las Vegas, Nevada. They spent the last 51 years of their lives together in Salt Lake. Jim loved to play golf but was never able to reach the degree of proficiency he desired. Bowling was a substitute for golf after his back failed him, then that too became too much for his old back.

Jim is survived by his sons, Gary (Kathy) and Bill (Linda), 12 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. In addition to Ilona, he was preceded in death by his oldest son, Alan, and Alan’s wife, Blake Jones Holyoak, and by his mother and father. Jim was very proud of his wife, his sons and their wives, and his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved them all very much even though he had a difficult time expressing his feelings.

A funeral will be held on Saturday, June 9, at 11:00 a.m. at the Hyland Lake Ward, 981 East Revere Circle, just north of 5600 South in Murray. There will be a viewing one hour prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, Jim suggested that donations be made to the LDS Church’s Perpetual Education Fund. Burial will be at Murray City Cemetery.
