On March 16, 2009, our wonderful Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother passed away peacefully at the age of 86. Verna was a very kind and compassionate person who was loved by all who knew her.\n\nVerna was born on May 26, 1922 in Sanpete County, Utah, to Joseph Edgar Nelson and Lona Ann Jones Nelson. She graduated from West High School and she worked as a secretary for much of her life. She retired as a word processor at the LDS Church Offices. Verna’s greatest love was for her family; her second greatest love was for her church; and, her third greatest love was music. She sang in barbershop quartets and competed nationally. She was a long time participant in the Sweet Adeline’s. She also loved singing with her brothers and sisters and anyone who would strike up a song.\n\nVerna married Clyde H. Leavitt who preceded her in death. She later married Vern C. Nichol and she was an active member of the LDS church having served a mission with Vern in Denver, Colorado. Verna also held many positions in the church as organist or leading the music. \n\nVerna is survived by her husband of 36 years, Vern; and her children, Jeffry (Majorie), Jack (Chris), Richard, and Gloria Jayne Austin (Randy). Verna is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Dianne; sister, Fern (Gene); and brother, Joe (Ruth). Verna leaves several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Verna is preceded in death by her husband, Clyde (Bud); daughter, Julia; and grandson, Byran. She is also preceded in death by her brothers, Ben and Larry Nelson.\n\nThe family wishes to thank the staff of Cottonwood Creek for their kindness and assistance and to the staff of Comfort Hospice Care who cared for her during her final weeks.\n\nFuneral services will be held Friday, March 20, 2009 at 11 AM at the Rose Park North Stake Center located at 1155 West 1200 North, Salt Lake City. Friends and family may call one hour prior to the service. Interment at Elysian Burial Gardens, Murray, Utah.
